Japanese Government Scholarships (MEXT scholaships)

- Embassy Recommendation
You can apply through the Japanese embassy or consulate general of the applicant's native country. Please inquire the Japanese embassy or consulate general in your country for more details.
- University Recommendation
If you wish to apply for MEXT research student, for the details, please inquire your prospective supervisor or check each graduate school's website. If you wish to apply for Japanese Studies Program, please confirm if the institution you have been enrolled has a signed agreement with Kumamoto University.

Korea-Japan Joint Government Scholarship Program
The second phase of the program (Japan-Korea Joint Government Scholarship Program for the Students in Science and Engineering Departments) concluded in 2019, and the third phase of the program has began in 2020. With this new phase, the target is expanded to graduate students and it covers a wider range of fields, not limited to science and engineering. The program also promotes mutual exchange between Japanese and Korean students. (Up until the second phase, the program focused on the acceptance of Korean undergraduate students in Japanese universities for science and engineering programs only.)
※The expected timing for acceptance requests from MEXT to universities: Around December for graduate schools and around June for undergraduate programs (Details are yet to be confirmed).
Reservation Program for Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students by Pre-arrival Admission
This program provides Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship (48,000 yen per month) for privately funded international students who are scheduled to enroll as regular students in graduate programs, utilizing the pre-arrival admission system. The scholarship is provided for 12 or 6 months. In order to apply, the graduate school where you are scheduled to enroll must be officially recognized as eligible for the program. Additionally, the applicant must meet all requirements and must be officially recommended by the graduate school.
