Japan-Korea Joint Government Scholarship Program for the Students in Science and Engineering Departments

About the Japan-Korea Joint Exchange Program in Science and Engineering Students

In October 1998, the then President of the Republic of South Korea, Kim Dae-jung, met with Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi for bilateral talks. They agreed to create a 21st Century partnership to foster strong relationships among the foreign exchange students from both countries. The graduating students from the Republic of South Korea have been invited to universities in Japan to complete four year science degrees, incorporating the latest technological advancements. In order to support the partnership program, our university has been a participant since the first semester of 2000. We offer an exchange center with prep school support and specialist education in the engineering, science and physics faculties.

Steps from Entry to Graduation

(1)Selection and placement of students

Schools are selected from among those Korean high schools nominated by the sponsors. Students are selected and allocated to our university first by nomination by the Korean organizer and second by examination by the Japanese organizer.

(2)Prep schools

Beginning in March, selected students will follow an intensive 6 month course in Korea to learn Japanese and other subjects. The students arrive in Japan and continue to study Japanese language and other subjects until the following March.

(3)Entrance into the faculty and graduation

When this one year of preparatory school work is completed at the student exchange center, the students become official Engineering or Physics students. Beginning in April, they follow the curriculum specified by their faculties and departments until graduation.
