Upon arrival in Japan, you will need some Japanese yen for transport and meals. Please exchange some money at the airport in advance of your arrival. If you are eligible for a JASSO scholarship, you will receive a relocation allowance and the first stipend of the scholarship about three weeks after your arrival. We strongly urge that you bring enough money to support yourself during this initial period (approx. $1,000 USD).

You will need photographs of yourself (about 7 pictures, sized 4.0 cm x 3.0 cm) for various formalities, such as completing your alien registration at City Hall and registering at Kumamoto University International House after your arrival.

We recommend that you obtain travel insurance in case something happens to you or your luggage on your way to Japan.
