Kumamoto University’s graduate schools aim to contribute to the advancement of culture by teaching, studying and thoroughly investigating academic theory and application and by cultivating the profound knowledge and superior capabilities necessary to follow the profession for which a high degree of specialization is required.
 
Graduate School of Education

The Master’s Course aims to provide students with a detailed and profound educational knowledge and research methods from a broad perspective based on education for training teachers provided in undergraduate programs. We also seek to enhance their theoretical and practical research capabilities and expertise related to educational settings, and to improve the qualities and abilities required of teachers.
The Graduate School of Teacher Education seeks to develop the practical teaching skills required of teachers who can resolve regional education issues by linking theory and practice and take a leading role in primary and secondary education.

The Graduate School of Social and Cultural Sciences endeavors to nurture highly specialized professionals who can act as core personnel in various sectors in the community and administrative and business settings, using practical knowledge founded on humanities, social sciences, and instructional studies in modern society. Master’s Course Science Physics The educational goals are to create, develop and spread the physical way of thinking and foster highly specialized professionals who can contribute to the construction of a safe and wealthy society.
Chemistry This course aims to provide education that enables students to understand the fundamental properties of various materials in the natural world from a chemical perspective to elucidate the development mechanism of physical properties and the chemical reactivity of materials from the perspective of molecular chemistry, so that they can work to create new materials and new material analysis methods through the control of the physical properties and chemical reactivity of materials; and to produce specialists who can contribute to both local and international societies and the advancement of the field of material science required for future generations.
Earth and Environmental Sciences This course aims to foster students who understand the earth’s environment from the perspective of fundamental science and have a broad basic knowledge of natural sciences; and to foster students with specialized skills and broad horizons who have a solid foundation in understanding issues incorporating multidisciplinary fields and who possess specialized knowledge and techniques for field surveys and subtle laboratory analysis, to cultivate the creative skills necessary to analyze and integrate environmental issues and address various issues facing contemporary society.
Biological Sciences Biological sciences have been rapidly advancing and becoming closely associated with basic biology and a wide variety of applied sciences, including medical science, agricultural and marine biology, and engineering. They also have become further affiliated with humanities, including economics and law. Accordingly, biological sciences have had a huge influence on human society and industry. Our course encourages students to perform laboratory analysis and field surveys that deal with every aspect of biological sciences, from genes to communities, as the assemblage of various species populations, aiming to groom students who have a good insight into biology and a high logical thinking ability to proactively contribute to human society with a clear vision.
Mathematics Mathematics This course is designed to foster independent students who possess the ability to think theoretically and resolve problems, and who have a broad understanding of the newest mathematical theories and the skills to apply them, and can respond to the demands of society, by providing education and research on how to investigate and theorize the basic structure of mathematics.
Applied Mathematics This course is designed to foster independent students who possess the ability to think theoretically and resolve problems, who have a broad understanding of the newest mathematical theories and the skills to apply them, and can respond to the demands of society, and who actively engage in addressing issues in various fields of science, including physical science and engineering, by providing education and research on how to investigate and theorize the basic structure of mathematics.
New Frontier Sciences The Field of New Frontier Sciences provides various educational opportunities in cutting-edge and interdisciplinary academic fields, including high-pressure shock compression science, bioelectrics, mitigation technology for environmental problems, and hydrological sustainability. We aim to foster students who have an international perspective, creativity, and interdisciplinary views on various research fields, by providing students who have learned the basis of natural sciences, including physical science and engineering, in undergraduate programs with a high-degree of education that enables them to integrate their knowledge and cultivate new academic areas.
Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry It is important to take into account environmental burdens for the development of material sciences that will support society in the future. Accordingly, it is strongly required to promote new applied research in order to understand the structure and functions of materials and bio-related molecules based on molecular theory. The aim of this field is to nurture students who can resolve various issues in the field of applied chemistry, by having them acquire the practical research abilities necessary to conduct independent research to develop new technologies as chemistry researchers.
Materials Science and Engineering The Field of Materials Science and Engineering aims to foster highly specialized professionals who have basic knowledge and applied skills related to the investigation of the physical and chemical properties of materials, the streamlining of processes, and the recycling of materials needed to construct new material systems that support the continuous development of human welfare; and who possess the comprehensive thinking ability supported by in-depth expertise that enables them to flexibly respond to ever-changing social needs from scientific and technological perspectives based on material science.
Mechanical System Engineering The Field of Mechanical System Engineering aims to foster engineers and researchers with advanced professional abilities who can figure out issues related to various mechanical systems from the multidisciplinary perspectives of a complex society, the environment, and energy. Accordingly, we seek to improve their expertise, awareness of issues, and ability to resolve the issues through fundamental and applied education and research on mechanical systems.
Computer Science and Communication Engineering Electrical, electronic and computer engineering are fundamental technologies that support a modern information and computer society. To develop these technologies, it is indispensable to train expert engineers and researchers. The Field of Computer Science and Communication Engineering aims to develop expert engineers and researchers who can think creatively and flexibly as described below:

Civil and Environmental Engineering The Field of Civil and Environmental Engineering produces students with a rich sense of humanity who can widely deal with various issues related to infrastructure improvement, urban and regional environment design, disaster preparedness, and conservation of wide-area environments, including the geosphere and the hydrosphere, aiming to create a comfortable living environment and an urban and regional environment in harmony with the global environment. Based on these viewpoints, we seek to foster highly specialized professionals with high expertise by having them acquire the ability to judge comprehensively based on in-depth insight into humans and nature and sophisticated technical knowledge and problem-solving skills available internationally.
Architecture The basic policy of the Field of Architecture is to provide in-depth technical knowledge of architecture in the fields of architectural planning, design, structure, materials, environment and facilities, and of architectural history, urban planning, architectural production and conservation, and disaster prevention. This field also aims to instill in students knowledge of advanced technology, the skills to apply it, and the ability to develop new technologies, lead others, judge comprehensively from a wide perspective, and engage in creative activities in cooperation with others.
Doctoral Course Science Mathematics The Department of Mathematics aims to have students learn and deepen the most sophisticated, cutting-edge theories, focusing on basic research in the fields of algebra, geometry, analysis, stochastic processes, and mathematical physics, to train students who can contribute to the development of scholarship and the advancement of society.
Physics Our educational goals are to provide a background to deeply understand various phenomena occurring in nature at microscopic to macroscopic scales from the perspective of basic physical science, and to help students become professional and independent scientists.
Chemistry The Department of Chemistry aims to provide in-depth education that enables students to understand the fundamental properties of various materials in the natural world from a chemical perspective to engage in clarifying the basic principles of chemistry, elucidate the development mechanism of physical properties, and the chemical reactivity of materials from the perspective of molecular chemistry, so that they can work to create new materials through the control of the physical properties and chemical reactivity of materials; and to produce researchers who can contribute to both local and international societies and the advancement of the field of material science required to establish the fundamental and applied field of chemistry toward future generations.
Earth and Environmental Sciences The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences aims to provide students with cutting-edge knowledge and skills on basic science related to the global environment to cultivate creative research capabilities. In particular, we seek to develop comprehensive research capabilities that can deal with various problems in an interdisciplinary field to foster students who can contribute to resolving various global environmental issues facing modern society.

The Department of Biological Sciences produces world-leading scientists who have an international sense and highly specialized skills based on basic biology and environmental biology coupled with a broad range of knowledge, and who can adapt flexibly to human society despite its dynamic changes.
New Frontier Sciences (New Frontier Sciences) The Field of New Frontier Sciences provides various educational opportunities in cutting-edge and interdisciplinary academic fields, including high-pressure shock compression science, bioelectrics, mitigation technology for environmental problems, and hydrological sustainability, in cooperation with the Institute of Pulsed Power Science and the Center for Water Cycle, Marine Environment, and Disaster Management. We also provide appropriate guidance to students according to their stage of academic development under a competitive environment, aiming to foster interdisciplinary students who have an international perspective and can lead the world.
Advanced Technology
Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry
The basic elements to develop humanity-oriented chemical technology in the near future can be found in a biological system with well-balanced functions. The Department of Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry aims to train specialists with creativity, originality, and an international mindset who can contribute to establishing new scientific technologies that support an industrial society through the clarification of basic properties of nature, including a biological system, from the perspective of material chemistry, a wide application of such research results, and the development of functions using artificial materials.
Materials Science and Engineering Education on material synthesis technology, which is one of the key technologies of modern science, provides the basis for various fields of science and technology. The Department of Science and Engineering provides multidisciplinary education on the creation of materials, and the process control, physical and chemical properties, analytical evaluation of metallurgical properties, and recycling of materials, aiming to nurture creative, international-minded and independent scientists who have deep expertise in materials science and the ability to think flexibly and logically from a broad perspective.
Advanced Mechanical Systems In the machinery industry, in which mechanical systems are rapidly diversified and sophisticated, it is becoming necessary to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to design and manufacture highly intelligent and multifunctional mechanical systems. Accordingly, the Department of Advanced Mechanical Systems develops human resources who possess knowledge of the basics and application of mechanical systems in a broad range of fields, ranging from thermal and fluid engineering and energy conversion to high-precision processing and machine design and manufacturing, and who can exercise their creativity, making use of such knowledge.
Intelligent Mechanical
Systems
Recent mechanical systems and structures making significant progress are required to have high performance and high function. It is also necessary to intellectually design and manufacture the entire system in harmony with the environment. The Department of Intelligent Mechanical Systems develops human resources who possess a broad knowledge of manufacturing process, ranging from the basics to application, have learning about intelligent manufacturing systems, including signal processing and system control using computer technologies, and can play an active role, exercising their creativity.
Computer Science and Electrical Engineering
Computer Science and Communication Engineering
Information and communication technologies (information processing and transmission) are the basic technologies supporting a globalized and advanced information society. The Department of Computer Science and Communication Engineering aims to train students who have highly specialized expertise and deep insight in the field of information and communication and other related fields, and who can contribute to human welfare creatively and practically.
Frontier Technology for Energy and Devices Under the functional and organic education and research project structure, in which energy engineering, a technical research field supporting our social infrastructure, is incorporated, the Department of Frontier Technology for Energy and Devices nurtures students with advanced and creative technical knowledge who can flexibly respond to complex and wide-ranging academic and social needs in the field of energy engineering. We also develop practical human resources who have the motivation to support the social infrastructure and an entrepreneurial spirit, by cultivating a deep ethical insight and a sense of responsibility to contribute to the development of the local and global communities under our education structure.
Human and Environmental Informatics Information science has become the central axis of the balanced and healthy development of all environments surrounding human beings, such as people, society, and nature. In the education of information science, it is necessary to explore the basic area of information, electric, and electronic science and expand and enrich the basis of the science. In this department, we aim to cultivate talented individuals who have expertise in the fields related to information, electronics, and control, and the boundary and composite fields, and who can actively participate in the globalized world with a broad outlook and high ethics, through multifaceted education on information engineering, electronics engineering, and control engineering.
Applied Mathematics The Department of Applied Mathematics aims to have students learn and deepen their knowledge of the most sophisticated, cutting-edge theories, focusing on basic research in the fields of algebra, spatial structure, linear and nonlinear analysis, and random analysis, to train students who can contribute to the development of scholarship and the advancement of society.

The Department of Environmental Conservation Engineering produces researchers and highly specialized professionals who can play an active role on the front line of society, through education on the safety, conservation, development and use of the natural and social environments and disaster prevention, and through systematic education on state-of-the-art technology related to coexistence with the natural and social environments.
Environmental Management and Planning The Department of Environmental Management and Planning produces researchers and highly specialized professionals who can play an active role on the front line of society, by systematically providing education on the infrastructure survey, planning, design, and management methods necessary to improve, develop, revitalize, and maintain the social infrastructure, taking into account regional-specific climates and cultures.
Architecture and Environmental Planning The Department of Architecture and Environment Planning cultivates global researchers who can play a leadership role in the international community and equivalently talented professionals who can play a leading role with a research mindset, both of whom can design local spaces, taking into account regional-specific climates and cultures, and can deal with environmental issues flexibly and widely in diverse natural and social environments of individual regions.
Building Materials and Structures The Department of Building Materials and Structures cultivates global researchers who can play a leadership role in the international community and equivalently talented professionals who can play a leading role with a research mindset, both of whom have cutting-edge knowledge and skills related to disaster prevention, maintenance and management, and repair of buildings.
