Research Fellow from the Stockholm School of Economics (Sweden) Visits Kumamoto University

On March 6, 2026, Dr. Åsa Malmström Rognes, a Research Fellow at the European Institute of Japanese Studies, Stockholm School of Economics, Sweden, visited Kumamoto University and met with Executive Vice Presidents Kazuhito Tomizawa and Jun Otani.
 
Dr. Rognes is conducting research on Japan’s economic security policies and strategies, with a particular focus on policies and governmental support for critical technologies, especially semiconductors. The purpose of the visit was to gain a deeper understanding of how the enabling environment is developing through collaboration among academia, industry, and government, as well as how such an environment continues to evolve.
 
During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on the role of universities in industrial development. They also engaged in an active discussion on the respective roles and relationships among universities, industry, and government in Japan and Sweden.
 
Following the meeting, Dr. Rognes joined a campus tour and visited the Memorial Museum of the Fifth High School and learned about the history and educational legacy of Kumamoto University.
