Kumamoto University Hosted Mansfield Café!
On January 24, 2026, Kumamoto University, in collaboration with the Mansfield Foundation, held the "Mansfield Café" at the Kumamoto City International Center as part of their joint initiatives. The event, now in its third time, was a great success, with 23 participants joining and engaging in lively conversations. The event featured Ms. Nicole Ibrahim and Mr. Stephen Money, both current U.S. federal government employees and 29th cohort Mansfield Foundation Fellows. They are currently in Japan, participating in a fellowship program that involves undergoing training at various Japanese government ministries.
The event began with brief self-introductions by Ms. Ibrahim and Mr. Money, where they shared details about their roles in the U.S. federal government and their activities since arriving in Japan. Afterward, the participants were divided into two groups for an informal conversation session, where they had the chance to chat about their work in the U.S., the challenges and rewards of their roles, and the differences between the U.S. and Japan. The conversation was lively and thought-provoking, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Throughout the event, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere encouraged meaningful interactions. For the participants, it was a rare opportunity to engage with international perspectives right here in Kumamoto. The guests also appreciated the chance to speak with people from diverse backgrounds, which gave them a fresh and enriching experience.
This “Mansfield Café” marked the last event for the 2025 academic year. However, Kumamoto University, in continued collaboration with the Mansfield Foundation, plans to host similar events in the future. Information about the next event will be shared on the university's website and our official Instagram once the schedule is confirmed.
Additionally, the Kumamoto-Mansfield Lecture Series is being held in a hybrid format (both in-person and online) through February 6, 2026. The series offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from current U.S. government employees on topics such as American politics, culture, public policy, and disaster risk reduction. Attendees can join a single session or multiple sessions.
We welcome participation not only from students and staff but also from members of the local community. If you are interested in gaining a global perspective, please feel free to join us.
