Diwali Illuminates Kumamoto University
On October 24th, 2025, Kumamoto University celebrated Diwali, the Indian Festival of Light, bringing warmth, brightness and cultural exchange to the campus. The event welcomed students and faculty members from various countries, creating a joyful atmosphere.The program kicked off with an introduction of the festival and its meaning. This was followed by a recorded message from the Charge d’Affaires of the Indian Embassy Mr. R. Madhu Sudan, who emphasized on the strongly growing partnership between Japan and India, as well as the continued cultural and academic collaboration between the two nations.
The origins of Diwali were explained through a short story from the Ramayana, followed by an overview of the traditional clothing and special foods associated with the festival. This provided participants with a broader understanding of how Diwali is celebrated diversely across various parts of India.
The main highlight of the event was the Rangoli making session, where participants got hands-on experience of designing rangoli with bright powdered colors. This interactive session allowed everyone to showcase their creativity, resulting in creation of beautiful designs and patterns.
After the activity, everyone gathered to enjoy traditional Indian snacks jointly provided by the Indian Embassy and Kumamoto University, including samosas, chai, gulab jamun, and soan papdi. Sharing these festive treats sparked relaxed conversation and created a warm, friendly atmosphere.
Towards the end, attendees reflected on their personal thoughts and experiences about Diwali, discussing cultural traditions and the value of togetherness. The celebration ended with expressions of gratitude to all those who supported and participated in the event.
This Diwali gathering not only highlighted the cultural richness of India but also contributed to strengthening the bonds within the diverse Kumamoto University community, reflecting the core spirit of Diwali: light, joy, and unity.
