"Manga from the Artistic Nation" - French Bande Dessinée Exhibition and "Struggles in Translating and Publishing Overseas Manga" Event
Kumamoto University, in collaboration with Newco One Co., Ltd.*, hosted the "French Bande Dessinée Exhibition – Manga from the Artistic Nation" from Oct. 22 to Nov. 4, offering a captivating insight into bandes dessinées (French comics) and their connection to Japan. On October 25th, the event featured a special talk "Struggles in Translating and Publishing Overseas Manga", bringing together experts to discuss the challenges of translating and promoting manga on a global scale. These events were organized to commemorate the recently signed partnership agreement between Kumamoto University and Université Bourgogne Europe, which took place just one day prior. The exhibition and talk served as a celebratory addition to this new collaboration between the two universities.During the event, Associate Professor Yoshihiro Ikegawa from the International Manga Research Center for Manga Studies, attached to the Faculty of Letters, Kumamoto University, and Masato Hara, a translator of French bandes dessinées and adjunct lecturer at Waseda University, shared their experiences and insights on the complexities of translating and publishing manga abroad. Their interactive and conversational style created an engaging atmosphere, making it feel like a friendly exchange between two experts, drawing the audience into a lively and informative discussion.
The event was followed by a wine-tasting session featuring Burgundy wines, generously provided by Université Bourgogne Europe. Participants enjoyed the wines while engaging in thoughtful discussions with the presenters and exploring the exhibition, creating a relaxed and convivial atmosphere that encouraged cultural exchange.
The event attracted more attendees than initially expected, with many engaging in animated discussions and posing insightful questions about manga, comics, and translation. This exchange underscored how both manga and wine serve as powerful mediums for connection, sparking dialogue and fostering cross-cultural understanding.
Kumamoto University remains committed to strengthening international partnerships, like the one with Université Bourgogne Franche-Comté, and bringing diverse cultural experiences to the local community.
