Indonesia Country-Focused Training Program on Strengthening Industry-Academia Collaboration

On October 16th, a delegation of 12 senior officials responsible for industry-academia collaboration at higher education institutions from Indonesia visited Kumamoto University. The delegation was led by Professor Emeritus Tsuyoshi Usagawa from Kumamoto University, alongside JICA Senior Advisor for International Cooperation Koichiro Watanabe, also Professor Emeritus at Kyushu University. This visit is part of a training program designed for leaders from Indonesian higher education institutions, aimed at enhancing the country’s global competitiveness and fostering networks in the field of industry-academia collaboration.
Kumamoto University was chosen as the destination for this program due to its notable achievements in industry-academia collaboration, which serves as a valuable model for others.
 
During the visit, Professor Tomonari Ogata from the Division for Innovation Development at the Headquarters for Research and Development Strategy delivered a presentation on industry-academia collaboration in Japan. He highlighted the development of collaborative initiatives at Kumamoto University, emphasizing joint research and commissioned research with companies. Following the lecture, Professor Ogata led the delegation on a tour of the newly opened SOIL (Semiconductor Open Innovation Laboratory) building, which focuses on semiconductor education, research, and industry-academia collaboration. The group also visited the clean room and rental labs, where they gained insight into the university’s cutting-edge research facilities.
