Opening Ceremony for the Short-Term Exchange Program and Japanese Studies Program - Autumn 2025

On September 25th, 2025, Kumamoto University hosted the Opening Ceremony for the Short-Term Exchange Program and Japanese Studies Program at the Center for International Education.

This year, the university is excited to welcome 65 international students from 16 countries and regions. Among them, China and Indonesia represent the largest groups. The ceremony kicked off with a warm welcome speech by Lecturer Lander Bryant Sims, Special Assistant to the President for Global Education.

During his address, Lecturer Sims introduced the Japanese phrase 一期一会” (ichigo ichie), which translates to “one encounter, one opportunity.” He explained that this concept highlights the uniqueness of each meeting and moment, encouraging everyone to treasure their time at Kumamoto University as if it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. In his speech, he also emphasized the importance of maintaining good health, building meaningful connections, and making the most of their time at the university to study hard—an investment for their future.

Faculty members responsible for teaching, advising, and supporting student life were also introduced during the ceremony, providing a sense of reassurance and support to the new students as they embark on their journey.

We wish all the new students the best of luck as they begin this exciting new chapter at Kumamoto University!
