President Ogawa Speaks on Semiconductor Industry at Japan–America Student Conference

On August 12, as one of the main programs of the 77th Japan–America Student Conference in Kumamoto, the “Kumamoto Semiconductor Panel Session” was held at the Kumamoto SDGs Mirai Park, where President Hisao Ogawa delivered a lecture on the theme of “The Semiconductor Industry and Kumamoto University.” He spoke passionately about the development of the semiconductor industry in Kumamoto and the Kyushu region, the importance of cultivating human resources, strengthening collaboration between industry and academia, fostering not only engineers but also professionals with managerial perspectives, and the significance of advancing semiconductor user industries. His message resonated strongly with the audience.

Following the lecture, many students gathered around President Ogawa, engaging in lively discussions and posing thoughtful questions—demonstrating the high level of interest in Kumamoto University’s initiatives.

This year’s conference brought together 36 students from the United States and 35 from Japan. Eleven members served on the Kumamoto site organizing committee, including four from Kumamoto University. The participants arrived in Kumamoto on August 7 and visited Aso and Amakusa to observe local water resources and explore regional revitalization initiatives, gaining deeper insights into local challenges.

On August 11, a peace learning program was held in a hybrid format, combining an in-person session at the 100th Anniversary Hall of Kumamoto University with online participation. The program included testimonies from atomic bomb survivors and other related lectures.

The conference concluded on August 13 with the “Kumamoto Forum,” where local students presented proposals developed in a policy recommendation workshop. Executive Vice President Jun Otani provided comments and evaluation of the presentations.

Kumamoto University will continue to contribute to the development of local industry and to foster future leaders through active engagement in international student exchange.
