Visit by Korean University Students Delegation

On July 1st, Kumamoto University had the honor of welcoming a delegation of 50 students from universities across South Korea. This group, carefully selected for their influential voices and leadership, visited under the theme “Efforts Toward Peace in Japan and Japan-Korea Exchange (日本の平和への取り組みと日韓交流)”. The visit, made possible with the support of the Japan-Korea Cultural Foundation, is part of the JENESYS2025 initiative—an important program aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of Japan through various cultural and academic exchanges.

The delegation was warmly received by Associate Professor Sangjin Choi from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, who played a key role in organizing and hosting the exchange activities. 30 Kumamoto University students participated, including members from the Japan-Korea Exchange Club "KOGUMA" and students with a keen interest in Korean language and culture.

After introductory remarks and a video presentation outlining the history and vision of Kumamoto University, the students were divided into small groups that included both Japanese and Korean participants. They engaged in vibrant discussions on a range of intriguing topics, such as differences in university life, travel challenges in Japan, and cultural insights. The conversations were lively, with both Japanese and Korean languages echoing across the room, accompanied by laughter and a sense of curiosity.

The results of these discussions were shared in 2-minute presentations, showcasing the diversity of thoughts and experiences. Interestingly, many of the presentations were  collaborative efforts between Japanese and Korean students, one each, with both sides taking the opportunity to speak in each other’s language, further enhancing the interaction and cross-cultural exchange.

To conclude the visit, the delegation toured the Memorial Museum of the Fifth High School, a symbol of Kumamoto University and a designated National Important Cultural Property. In front of this historic site, the students posed for a group photo, marking the perfect end to their meaningful visit.

This exchange is a testament to the power of mutual understanding. Through this initiative, both Kumamoto University and the visiting delegation have taken a significant step toward enhancing cross-cultural dialogue and building lasting friendships.
