Courtesy Visit by National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST)

On June 4th, a delegation from the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST), led by President Ching-Yu Yang and Vice President Shu-Ling Hsieh, visited Kumamoto University (KU). The relationship between Kaohsiung and Kumamoto is built on a foundation of friendship, with both cities recognized as "sister cities".

During their visit, they met with President Hisao Ogawa, Executive Vice President Jun Otani, and Professor Toshihiro Ihara, Dean of the Graduate School of Science and Technology. The meeting provided an opportunity for both institutions to share updates on their latest developments, academic initiatives, and explore avenues for further enhancing collaboration between the two universities.

Following the courtesy meeting, the NKUST delegation engaged in in-depth discussions with faculty members from KU’s Faculty of Advanced Science and Technology and the Center for Water Cycle, Marine Environment, and Disaster Management (CWMD). During the session, Dean Ihara provided an overview of the university’s initiatives in engineering education and research. Professor Makoto Takafuji, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, also presented a review of the ongoing collaborative efforts with NKUST, particularly in organizing the International Capstone Design Camp and Contest (ICDC). This program, a joint initiative between universities from Taiwan, Korea, and Japan, focuses on international problem/project-based learning (PBL). Professor Takafuji expressed his anticipation for the upcoming ICDC event, scheduled to take place at NKUST in August, and called for continued support and enhanced student engagement through future exchanges.

KU and NKUST have established a Double Degree Program, further strengthening the ties between the two institutions. Furthermore, both institutions expressed a desire to elevate their current inter-departmental agreement to an inter-university level, aiming for broader and more comprehensive collaboration in the future. This visit is expected to serve as a significant step in fostering long-term academic and cultural exchange between KU and NKUST.
