Exciting Summer Program at Kumamoto University Welcomed Students from ITS, Indonesia

From October 28th to 31st, Kumamoto University (KU) hosted a vibrant four-day summer program for 30 students from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Indonesia.

The program kicked off with an Opening Ceremony at the Lounge in the Center for International Education (CIE) on October 28th. Executive Vice President Jun Otani welcomed the students, emphasizing the program's dual focus on education and cultural exchange. He encouraged the students to enjoy their time both on and off campus. Following his address, Vice President Mitsuyo Kishida introduced the rich history and key facts about KU, highlighting various international education opportunities available to ITS students, including English-taught programs and double-degree options. This laid the groundwork for deeper connections and future collaborations.

Participants explored KU's historical treasures through campus tours of the Museum of the Engineering Faculty and the Memorial Museum of the Fifth High School, both recognized as National Important Cultural Properties. These visits enriched the students' understanding of KU’s heritage, particularly for those with engineering backgrounds, as they engaged with various machines and tools at the Engineering Museum, fueling their interest and passion.

The program featured a diverse range of lectures, covering topics from Japanese language studies to machine learning, volcanic activity at Mount Aso, and the restoration of Kumamoto Castle's stone walls. Students also had the opportunity to visit Mount Aso and Kumamoto Castle, allowing them to experience Japan’s stunning nature and cultural heritage firsthand while reinforcing what they learned in the classroom. Additionally, students enjoyed wearing traditional Yukata and tasting delicious Japanese sweets.

On the final day, students showcased their experiences through presentations, summarizing their insights from the program. The closing ceremony concluded with Vice President Mitsuyo Kishida presenting certificates of accomplishment, marking a successful end to the summer program.

This enriching experience allowed students to immerse themselves in Japanese culture and education at KU, fostering mutual understanding and laying the foundation for future exchanges between KU and ITS.
