Kumamoto University hosts a Top Global University Project Symposium

On Monday, March 5, 2018, Kumamoto University hosted a Top Global University Project Symposium.

Under the theme of “Globalization of Universities and Community-based Development of Global Human Resources,” the symposium was held to enable participants to exchange information and opinions so as to help resolve various issues emerging from ongoing globalization in local communities.

The first session included a briefing about Kumamoto University’s past, present and future efforts to globalize itself in line with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s (MEXT’s) Top Global University Project, in which the University was selected to take part in AY 2014. The session also covered information about the University’s unique initiatives such as the Global Leader Course and global education opportunities it has offered in partnership with local high schools and other academic institutions, as well as presentations by students who studied under the University’s study-abroad program. The second session included introduction to other Japanese universities’ pioneering efforts to develop global human resources in local communities—lecturers from Hokkaido University, Kanazawa University and University of Fukui explained their university’s efforts.

The symposium was attended by about 100 people from universities, high schools and other academic institutions and organizations in and outside Kumamoto Prefecture. Each lecture was followed by a lively discussion.

Kumamoto University will make further efforts to globalize itself and develop students’ skills to succeed in a global environment under MEXT’s Top Global University Project.
