KUMAMOTO UNIVERSITY SUMMER PROGRAM 2012 Call for Applications
1. Objectives
This program has been planned in order to provide an opportunity to the undergraduate students from abroad to experience the rich culture of Japan and Kumamoto. The students will be invited for a short stay in Kumamoto, and the invitation is open to the undergraduate students studying in universities having agreement with Kumamoto University for student exchange.
2. About Kumamoto University
The history of Kumamoto University dates back to 1887 when the Fifth High School was established at Kumamoto during the Meiji Era. The present Kumamoto University was established in 1949 as a National University. Currently it has 7 Faculties, 8 graduate Schools, 13 Research Centers, 2,000 teaching and support staff, and more than 10,000 students studying in undergraduate and graduate programs. 3. About Kumamoto City
Kumamoto University is located in Kumamoto City which is in the central part of Kyushu island in western Japan. Kumamoto City is also known as the "City of Forests" since it is blessed with an abundance of nature. The City is surrounded by natural and unpolluted water resources and beautiful mountains including Mount Aso, which has one of the largest caldera in the world. 4. About Kumamoto University Summer Program 2012
l Period: July 30, 2012 – August 11, 2012 (13 days)
Ø Those who successfully complete the program will be awarded the Certificates.
l Total number of participants: 40
* If there are more number of applicants, it may be necessary to make a
selection among the applicants.
l Contents (tentative):
Ø Japanese Language Classes
Ø Japanese Study Classes
Ø Hands-on Experience of Japanese Culture (wearing Japanese dress,
preparing Japanese traditional sweets etc)
Ø Study Visits
(The places of visits may be changed due to unavoidable circumstances)
l Accommodation:
Ø It is planned to arrange the accommodation (including breakfast) in nearby Hotels.
5. Who can Participate
l Those students who are undergraduate students studying in universities with which Kumamoto University has agreement for student exchange, and have been recommended by their respective universities.
l Those who have passed N4(level 3) or higher of Japanese language Proficiency test or have same Japanese ability.
l Most of the programs will be delivered in Japanese language.
Ø All the participants are required to arrange for their travel insurance at their home countries before departing to Japan.
Ø The participants who will obtain a visa are expected to return to their home countries soon after the completion of the program on August 11.
6. Participation Fee
l 80,000yen.
l The airfare and travel expenses to Kumamoto and the food expenses to be borne by the participants.
l The expenses related to accommodation at Kumamoto will be taken care by Kumamoto University.

7. Method of Payment of Participation Fee
The participation fee will be collected on July 31 (Tuesday). Please make the payment in cash and in Japanese yen. Credit card, traveler`s check, overseas remittance are not accepted.
8. Application Procedure
The person-in-charge of the university is requested to send the following documents by email (pdf format) or by fax on or before May 18, 2012 (Friday). Also, please send the original documents by airmail.
l Application form for Kumamoto University Summer Program 2012 (Form 1, Form 1-2).
* The form has to be filled-in and signed by the applicant.
l Recommendation (Form 2)
* This form contains the details of the applicant(s) and have to be signed by an administrator of senior rank such as Dean and above.

9. Visa Formalities
l An entry Visa to Japan is needed for students from certain countries. After the documents are received and the student is shortlisted for admission, the related visa documents will be sent to the person-in-charge at your University. Please apply for the Visa at the nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate.
10. Selection Result
If there are more number of applicants, make a selection among the applicants and selection result will be informed through the person-in-charge at your University on May 22(tentative).
11. Withdrawal from the Program
If you decide to withdraw from the program, please inform us, through the person-in-charge at your University immediately, and at the latest by May 25, 2012. (E-mail: gji-ryugaku@jimu.kumamoto-u.ac.jp).

13. “Kumamoto University Summer Program 2012” Scholarship

※Applicants must arrive in Japan between July 25th (Wed.) and July 30th(Mon), and leave Japan between August 11th(Sat) and August 16th (Thu.).
Students from countries where an entry Visa to Japan is required are expected to arrive in Japan on July 30th (Mon.), and return to their home countries on August 11th (Sat.).

\80,000 yen /per person
3. Selection
If the number of applicants exceeds the number of scholarship recipients, Kumamoto University will choose scholarship recipient according to the applicant's order of the university’s recommendation (Form 2) and Form 1-2 .
Selection process will not be announced.
4. Selection Result
The result of the selection will be sent to the person-in-charge at each university.
5. Notes
Scholarship recipients will be asked to submit a report on the final day of this program.
A copy of your passport and return ticket to leave Japan which has the date of departure will be needed for the confirmation of the arrival and departure date.
