Procedures for Re-Entry (Special Re-Entry Permit System)
Foreign nationals in possession of a valid passport and residence card who will be re-entering Japan within one year of their departure (or, if the period of stay expires within one year, re-entering Japan before that expiration date) to continue their activities in Japan, will, in principle, not be required to apply for a re-entry permit under the Special Re-Entry Permit System. However, since the validity of the Special Re-Entry Permit cannot be extended while outside Japan, if foreign nationals who have departed from Japan on a Special Re-Entry Permit System fail to re-enter Japan within one year of their departure, they will lose their residential status.
If the period of stay expires within one year, the period of the re-entry permit is the expiration date of the period of stay, even under the Special Re-Entry Permit System. Therefore, if you fail to re-enter Japan before that expiration date, you will lose your residential status. When you leave Japan on business or return to your home country temporarily, be sure to confirm your period of stay. If the expiration date is approaching, it is advisable to renew your period of stay before leaving Japan.
