Dr. Joyce Trompeta from UCSF Visits Kumamoto University and Gives Two Seminars

On October 20, 2026, Dr. Joyce Trompeta, Professor of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine and a Fulbrighter, visited Kumamoto University.

During her visit, two seminars were held for students, faculty, and staff, with the aim of broadening the international perspectives of students and young researchers, promoting international research exchange, and raising awareness of the Fulbright Program.

During the lunch break, the "Women in Science Brown Bag Seminar" was held at the Kurokami Campus, providing an opportunity for participants to discuss the achievements of women in research and international research careers. Dr. Trompeta shared her personal experiences as a researcher, including how she had been encouraged and inspired by senior female researchers throughout her career. The seminar offered participants an inspiring opportunity to reflect on their own potential and future career paths with greater confidence.

In the evening, the seminar and networking event "Global Opportunities for Future Doctors" was held at the Honjo North Campus for the second consecutive year in cooperation with Fulbright Japan. Alongside Dr. Trompeta, two Kumamoto University School of Medicine alumni served as speakers: Dr. Shigeyoshi Yamanaga, Director of Transplant Surgery at Kumamoto Red Cross Hospital, and Dr. Shota Horino, a junior resident at the same hospital. The speakers shared their international experiences and career journeys, while Dr. Trompeta also introduced the Fulbright Program and its scholarship opportunities. Participants actively engaged in the discussions, asking numerous questions. The event encouraged them to consider new challenges, including research and study opportunities abroad.

Each seminar attracted nearly 20 participants, including students, faculty, and staff. Through direct interaction with the speakers, participants gained a deeper understanding of international research opportunities and diverse career paths. Hearing firsthand from researchers with international experience provided valuable inspiration, particularly for students and young researchers, encouraging them to explore new possibilities for their futures.

Between the seminars, Dr. Trompeta and her colleagues paid a courtesy visit to President Hisao Ogawa of Kumamoto University. They exchanged views on international research collaboration and the development of early-career researchers.
