【Kumamoto University Study Abroad Campaign】Short-Term Study Abroad Programs in Korea and Taiwan
As part of the Kumamoto University Study Abroad Campaign – Global 1000 Challenge, which aims to encourage students to gain international experience, Kumamoto University conducted short-term study abroad programs in Korea and Taiwan in August 2026, with 20 students participating in each program. The Korea program was held at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies from August 19 to 24, while the Taiwan program was held mainly at National Sun Yat-sen University from August 24 to 27.In Korea, students took introductory Korean language classes at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and participated in cultural activities, including traditional crafts, as well as exchanges with local students. Participants commented that the experience made them want to visit not only Korea but also other countries, and that they hoped to build on this experience toward longer-term study abroad opportunities in the future.
In Taiwan, students participated in Mandarin language classes, cultural activities, and a campus tour at National Sun Yat-sen University. They also took a field trip to Tainan, where they visited the Confucius Temple, the National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Anping Fort, and other sites. By experiencing Taiwan’s history and culture firsthand, the students had an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Taiwan.
Participants commented that the program gave them a more positive view of studying abroad, made them want to explore more countries, and helped them feel more comfortable about traveling overseas. Although the programs were short, they provided students with a valuable opportunity to take their first step toward further international experiences.
Through the Global 1000 Challenge, Kumamoto University will continue to expand opportunities for students to experience the world firsthand and encourage them to take the next step from short-term international experiences to medium- and long-term study abroad programs.
