"Language, Love & Culture": Cross-Cultural Bonds Deepen at the Taiwanese Cultural Exchange Workshop
Kumamoto University hosted the UAAT-KOOU Taiwanese Cultural Exchange Workshop on June 5, 2026. Organized by the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), this year’s event, themed “Language, Love & Culture,” attracted more than 30 Japanese and international students eager to experience Taiwanese culture, language, and cuisine.
Returning to Kumamoto University for its successful second year, the workshop integrated positive psychology with cultural exchange through the concept of "The Five Love Languages" (Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch). This framework encouraged participants to reflect on their emotional needs and daily expressions of connection. Following the discussion, students collaborated on a large-scale collective art project, drawing Taiwanese landmarks such as Taipei 101 and cultural icons like bubble tea, which served as a creative exercise in mutual cooperation and communication.
A key highlight of this year's program was the introduction of traditional Taiwanese heritage. Students explored classic everyday goods, such as the iconic Gia-ji bag, and engaged in traditional childhood games, including battle chips and blowing plastic balloons. The event also offered an immersive approach to language learning. Participants learned practical Mandarin phrases and were encouraged to use them during interactive Q&A sessions. The supportive atmosphere—where peers celebrated every language attempt with positive reinforcement—allowed participants to practice Mandarin naturally and confidently. A delicious selection of authentic Taiwanese snacks was also served, wrapping the entire venue in a relaxed, friendly, and festive atmosphere.
Events like this workshop highlight Kumamoto University’s active commitment to promoting international exchange and deepening ties with global partners. By hosting these vibrant cultural programs, the university continues to cultivate a multicultural campus, nurturing global perspectives and lasting friendships among both domestic and international students.
