KUMAMOTO UNIVERSITY SUMMER PROGRAM 2011

1.    Objectives

This program has been planned in order to provide an opportunity to the undergraduate students from abroad to experience the rich culture of Japan and Kumamoto. The students will be invited for a short stay in Kumamoto, and the invitation is open to the undergraduate students studying in universities having agreement with Kumamoto University for student exchange.
 

2.    About Kumamoto University

The history of Kumamoto University dates back to 1887 when the Fifth High School was established at Kumamoto during the Meiji Era. The present Kumamoto University was established in 1949 as a National University. Currently it has 7 Faculties, 8 graduate Schools, 13 Research Centers, 2000 teaching and support staff, and more than 10000 students studying in undergraduate and graduate programs. 3.    About Kumamoto City

Kumamoto University is located in Kumamoto City which is in the central part of Kyushu island in western Japan. Kumamoto City is also known as the "City of Forests" since it is blessed with an abundance of nature. The City is surrounded by natural and unpolluted water resources and beautiful mountains including Mount Aso, which has one of the largest caldera in the world. 4.    About Kumamoto University Summer Program 2011

Period:   July 4, 2011 – July 16, 2011 (13 days)
Ø Those who successfully complete the program will be awarded the Certificates.
Total number of participants: 40
Contents (tentative):
Ø Japanese Language Classes
Ø Japanese Study Classes
Ø Hands-on Experience of Japanese Culture (wearing Japanese dress,
preparing Japanese traditional sweets etc)
Ø Study Visits
(The places of visits may be changed due to unavoidable circumstances)
Accommodation:
Ø It is planned to arrange the accommodation (including breakfast) in nearby Hotels.
 

5.    Who can Participate

Those students who are undergraduate students studying in universities with which Kumamoto University has agreement for student exchange, and have been recommended by their respective universities.
Those who have passed level 3 or higher of Japanese language Proficiency test or have same Japanese ability.
Most of the programs will be delivered in Japanese language.
 
Ø All the participants are required to arrange for their travel insurance at their home countries before departing to Japan.
Ø All the participants are expected to return to their home countries soon after the completion of the program on July 16.
 

6.    Participation Fee

80,000yen.
The airfare and travel expenses up to Kumamoto and the food expenses to be borne by the participants.
The expenses related to accommodation at Kumamoto will be taken care by Kumamoto University.
 

7.    Method of Payment of Participation Fee

The participation fee will be collected on July 5 (Tuesday). Please make the payment in cash and in Japanese yen. Credit card, traveler`s check etc are not accepted.
 

8.    Application Procedure

The person-in-charge of the concerned University is requested to send the following documents (pdf format) or by fax on or before May 27, 2011 (Friday). Also, please send the original documents by airmail.
The completed Application form for Kumamoto University Summer Program 2011 (Form 1).
* The form has to be filled-in and signed by the applicant.
Recommendation (Form 2)
    * This form contains the details of the applicant(s) and have to be signed by an administrator of senior rank such as Dean and above.
    * If there are more number of applicants, it may be necessary to make a selection among the applicants.
 

9.    Visa Formalities

For students from certain countries an entry Visa to Japan is needed. After the documents are received and the student is shortlisted for admission, the related visa documents will be sent to the person-in-charge at your University. Please apply for the Visa at the nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate.
 

10. Withdrawal from the Program

If you decide to withdraw from the program, please inform us, through the person-in-charge at your University immediately, and at the latest by June 3, 2011.
