Delegation from the University Academic Alliance in Taiwan (UAAT) Visited Kumamoto University
On December 11th, a 42-member delegation from the University Academic Alliance in Taiwan (UAAT) visited Kumamoto University. The delegation was led by Distinguished Professor Huey-Jen Su, Director of the Strategic Planning Office of UAAT, and Vice President Chung-Chih Wu of National Taiwan University, who serves as the Executive Officer of UAAT’s Administrative Office. From Kumamoto University, Executive Vice President Jun Otani, Vice President Mitsuyo Kishida, as well as deans and representatives from various faculties, attended the meeting to welcome the delegation.The meeting commenced with an overview of Kumamoto University, presented by Executive Vice President Jun Otani. This was followed by presentations from UAAT representatives, who provided an overview of UAAT and highlighted ongoing collaborative projects. They also outlined potential opportunities for future cooperation in diverse research fields, including semiconductors, life sciences, Engineering & Mandarin studies, sciences, social sciences & humanities. Each leading university in these fields shared its vision for collaboration. Additionally, member universities of UAAT provided brief introductions to their institutions, laying the groundwork for expanded and diversified partnerships.
Following these presentations, deans and faculty representatives from Kumamoto University introduced themselves and their faculties. A free discussion session fostered an open exchange of ideas, enhancing mutual understanding and encouraging further collaboration.
After the meeting, the UAAT delegation participated in campus tours. They visited the Museum of Engineering Faculty, a site designated as a National Important Cultural Property, gaining insights into Kumamoto University’s rich history and traditions. The delegation also toured the Kumamoto University Shock Laboratory, home to the only comprehensive explosion experiment facility among Japan’s national universities, providing them with a closer look at KU’s cutting-edge research capabilities.
Kumamoto University is a member of the Kyushu-Okinawa Open University (KOOU), an association of 11 national universities in the Kyushu-Okinawa region. Earlier this year, KOOU and UAAT signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on international cooperation. This MOU has already facilitated discussions on joint research and educational collaborations. The UAAT delegation’s visit further deepened the partnership, enhanced information exchange, and paved the way for additional cooperative initiatives in the future.
