Vice President of Ateneo de Manila University Visits the Center for Globalization, Kumamoto University

On January 28, 2015, Dr. Jose M. Cruz SJ, Vice President for University and Global Relations of Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines visited the Center for Globalization at Kumamoto University.

Established in 1859 and located in Quezon City, the largest city in Metro Manila on Luzon Island in the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University is one of the leading private universities in the country. It maintains schools from kindergarten to graduate school, enrolling approximately 20,000 students. Out of these, approximately 14,000 are undergraduate and graduate school students. The University has actively promoted international exchange with Japanese universities and has signed inter-university exchange agreements with 23 universities in Japan. In the university evaluation conducted by public institutions in the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University is rated as having the highest level of education in the country, especially in the areas of English/English literature and contemporary linguistics.

In this visit, Dr. Cruz met with Assistant Professor Armando Quitain of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry in the Faculty of Engineering, and Manager Ryuya Fukumura of the International Affairs Division. They exchanged views on mutual dispatch and reception of students, summer programs, and exchange of instructors, and agreed to develop a good relationship between both universities.

After the meeting, Dr. Cruz visited the Memorial Museum of the Fifth High School, the 100th Anniversary Memorial Hall of the Faculty of Engineering, and other facilities in the university, showing great interest in its history and cutting-edge research.

This visit is expected to enhance international student and academic exchange between Kumamoto University and Ateneo de Manila University as well as other higher education institutions in the Philippines.
