Music Beyond Borders: Kumamoto University and Montana State University Hold Inspiring Joint Concert
On March 15, Kumamoto University and Montana State University held a joint concert at Kumamoto Prefectural Theater, bringing together student musicians from both institutions for an inspiring performance that celebrated friendship and cultural exchange.Approximately 100 performers took part in the concert, including 45 students from the Montana State University Symphony Orchestra as well as members of the Kumamoto University Philharmonic Orchestra. Their dynamic collaboration created a vibrant musical experience and demonstrated the strong bonds formed through international exchange.
Since signing an inter-university exchange agreement in 1987, the two universities have fostered long-standing cooperation across a wide range of academic fields. This concert marked the first major collaboration through music, offering a meaningful opportunity to deepen mutual understanding and connection through a shared artistic language.
The concert was jointly directed by Professor Tobin Stewart of the College of Arts and Architecture at Montana State University and Professor Hirotaka Yamazaki of the Graduate School of Education at Kumamoto University. Their joint leadership highlighted the potential for further academic and artistic collaboration between the two institutions.
A notable highlight was a saxophone solo by Dr. Wonki Lee, accompanied by the orchestra, featuring works by Japanese composer Ryota Ishikawa. The whole program included both Japanese and American repertoire, creating a rich platform for cultural dialogue and exchange.
On the day prior to the concert, students participated in a joint rehearsal and social gathering at the 100th Anniversary Hall of Kumamoto University. These activities encouraged active communication and helped build friendships that will continue beyond the performance.
