Creation of the “Kumamoto University Spirit Scholarship Program for Students Affected by the Kumamoto Earthquake” (Grant Type) under the Kumamoto Earthquake Revitalization Project Foundation and Others
We extend our deepest sympathies to all the students and their families affected by the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake.
With the aim of supporting students whose parents/guardians (or financial sponsors) have been affected by the earthquake, Kumamoto University has newly launched the “Kumamoto University Spirit Scholarship Program for Students Affected by the Kumamoto Earthquake,” as a grant-type aid that does not require repayment, under the Kumamoto Earthquake Revitalization Project Foundation and others. Students who meet any of the requirements below are encouraged to apply for the Scholarship Program, which consists of “Emergency Grant” and “Emergency Scholarship.”
Please note that students may apply for these two types of emergency assistance simultaneously.
Emergency Grant
(Intended for enrolled students as of Academic Year 2016)
- A student whose financial sponsor is deceased or missing
- A student who is in severe financial hardship because his/her financial sponsor lost his/her job or there is no certain prospect for his/her financial sponsor’s re-employment/return to work
- A student whose financial sponsor’s house was completely destroyed, heavily damaged, or half destroyed (*Only applicable for owned houses.)
- A student (living away from home) who had to move because his/her apartment was partially destroyed
- A student who was/has been admitted to a hospital for injury
* Students who are already receiving or scheduled to receive the JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) Assistance Grant (Emergency Grant) or other grant-type scholarship are not entitled to apply for this Emergency Grant program.
Emergency Scholarship
(Intended for enrolled students as of Academic Year 2016 and incoming students in Academic Year 2017)
- A student whose financial sponsor is deceased or missing
As a grant-type scholarship, 100,000 yen is provided per month until the end of the minimum years required to complete a course of study. - A student who is in severe financial hardship because his/her financial sponsor lost his/her job or there is no certain prospect for his/her financial sponsor’s re-employment/return to work
- A student whose financial sponsor’s house was completely destroyed or heavily damaged
- Students whose financial sponsor is in either case 2 or 3 above, and whose family finances have not stabilized in Academic Year 2017 may continue receiving the scholarship for up to two years.
- Students to be newly admitted in Academic Year 2017 shall receive the scholarship for one year.
- Students who, as of April 14, 2016, are on a leave of absence from school, who have remained in the same grade for another year, or who have stayed beyond the minimum years required to complete a course of study shall not be eligible for this financial aid.
1. Required Documents

- A document certifying that the applicant’s financial sponsor has deceased (or remains missing)
- Documents certifying the unemployment, etc. of the applicant’s financial sponsor: proof of resignation or dismissal, etc.
- A disaster victim certificate issued by a local government office
- A document that proves the applicant’s change of residence (proof of evacuation order, a copy of a newly signed apartment rental agreement, a document that proves change of residence, etc.)
- A document that proves hospitalization of the applicant
- Other documents necessary for screening
2. Important Notices
- Applications may not be made by students who are already receiving the JASSO Assistance Grant (Emergency Grant).
- Students who are already receiving or scheduled to receive a grant-type scholarship of 1.2 million yen/year or higher may not apply for this scholarship program. (Emergency Scholarship)
- For students who are already receiving or scheduled to receive a grant-type scholarship of less than 1.2 million yen/year, the difference shall be provided. (Emergency Scholarship)
- <Revocation of Emergency Scholarship>
The scholarship may be revoked in the case of withdrawal from school, failure to move on to the next grade due to poor academic performance, or recovery of the financial situation.
<Suspension of Emergency Scholarship>
The scholarship may be suspended if the recipient takes a temporary leave from school.

* If it is difficult to submit application documents on the designated dates due to an unavoidable reason, such as participation in practical work or an academic conference, please consult us in advance.
