1. Casualties
11 members of staff have reported minor injuries. The status of 279 Part-Time Lecturers has not yet been confirmed and the verification process is in progress.
3 students have reported minor injuries. The status of 60 students has not yet been confirmed and the verification process is in progress.
2. Material damage
Damage to some cultural properties including the Memorial Museum of the Fifth High School, the Chemical Laboratory of the Fifth High School and the Museum of the Engineering Faculty has been reported. Those buildings are presently out of use and their areas are off-limits.
An emergency danger assessment has been implemented for university facilities, and the safety of buildings deemed as potentially dangerous is now being confirmed.
Laboratory equipment has suffered falling damage. The extent of the damage with regard to chemicals is still under investigation.
3. University Hospital
The University Hospital is treating patients as usual. However, due to disruptions in Kumamoto city’s water supply, the hospital has had some difficulties in providing care.
4. Utilities
Electricity of all campuses is supplied. Water supply has recovered with the exception of North Kurokami (partially), North Honjo (partially), Middle Honjo and Oe. Gas supply has recovered in North Honjo (partially), Middle Honjo (partially), South Honjo and Oe.
5. Evacuation Zones
The North Kurokami Campus Gymnasium and Oe gymnasium (School of Pharmacy) have been established as evacuation shelters, supported by student volunteers.
Other universities have been providing additional support.
Although aftershocks continue, we will strive to determine the extent of the damage and ensure the safety of our university.
