1. Casualties
Six cases of light injury have been reported from the staff and faculty of Kumamoto University.
The safety of 11,091 (9,236 Japanese students, 523 international students, 1,332 students of University affiliated schools) has been confirmed. Three cases of light injury have been reported from the students. The safety of the remaining students, the staff and faculty is still under investigation.
2. Material damage
Damage has occurred to some cultural properties including the Memorial Museum of the Fifth High School, the Chemical Laboratory of the Fifth High School and the Museum of the Engineering Faculty. Those buildings are out of use and their areas are off-limits.
An emergency danger assessment has been implemented for university facilities, and the safety of buildings deemed as potentially dangerous is now being confirmed.
Laboratory equipment has suffered falling damage. Currently, there is no report of damage with regard to chemicals, etc. The extent of the damage is still under investigation.
3. University Hospital
The University Hospital is treating patients as usual. However, since Kumamoto city water and city utility gas supplies have been stopped, the hospital has some difficulties in its treatment.
4. Utilities
Electricity is supplied as usual. However, Kumamoto city utility gas supplies have been stopped. In some campuses Kumamoto city water supplies have been stopped. In campuses where water wells are available, water has been purified and provided for use.
Other conditions are currently under investigation.
5. Evacuation Zones
The North Kurokami Campus Gymnasium as well as the Oe gymnasium (School of Pharmacy) have been established as evacuation shelters supported by student volunteers.
Other universities have been providing support.
Although aftershocks continue, we will strive to comprehend the extent of the damage and ensure the safety of our University.
