Kumamoto University encourages students to purchase the following insurance policies.For those who plan to take out insurance, please see the details in the leaflets and brochures.
Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (PAS)
This insurance policy covers students who suffer physical injury from an unexpected accident in the course of their educational or research activities or on the way between a student’s residence and the university.
Students who suffer from aftereffects or die due to such an accident are also covered.
Purchase of the insurance policy / Insurance premiums
1.Students enrolled in Kumamoto University (including students in the Diploma Course and the Special Course, research student, international students, auditing students, and non-degree students) are eligible for the insurance policy. (insured persons)
2.This insurance is optional. (Some faculties/departments may ask all their students to purchase the insurance policy.)

Details of insurance coverage
Insurance benefits are paid if an insured person is physically injured in a sudden and unforeseen external event that occurs during the activities described in items (1) to (5) below. Item (6) is a special contract for medical students only.
1.During regular curricular activities
Regular curricular activities refer to activities conducted during lecture classes, experiments, practice sessions, speeches, and practical training (hereinafter collectively referred to as “classes”), and include the time described below:
a) When an insured person is engaged in research for his/her graduation thesis or degree thesis according to the instruction of his/her academic adviser. However, the time when he/she is engaged in such research in private places is excluded.
b) When an insured person is preparing for classes or clearing up after the classes according to the instruction of his/her academic adviser, or when he/she is involved in research activities at places where the classes are offered, university libraries, or other university facilities
2.During school events
When an insured person is participating in various school events, including an entrance ceremony, as part of educational activities
3.While being at university facilities for purposes other than those described in (1) and (2)
When an insured person is at facilities that the university possesses, uses or manages for educational activities. However, the time when he/she is at the dormitory or places where entry is prohibited by the university, when he/she is at university facilities at the time prohibited by the university, or when he/she is engaged in acts prohibited by the university is excluded.
4.During extracurricular activities When an insured person is engaged in cultural or athletic activities conducted under the control of internal student groups recognized by the university. For off-campus extracurricular activities, however, insurance coverage is limited to activities for which advance notification is provided to the university. 5.While communing between home and the university and traveling between university facilities When an insured person is commuting between home and the university for regular curricular activities, school events, or extracurricular activities, or is travelling between university facilities

6.Coverage for the prevention of contact infection (for medical students only)

Liability Insurance Coupled with PAS
This liability insurance policy covers students who assume legal liability for damage caused by injuring others or destroying others’ property during specific activities (described below).
1.Eligible people
Students who have purchased the Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (PAS) policy.
(It is impossible to purchase this liability insurance policy only.)
2.Eligible activities
Students who have purchased the Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (PAS) policy.
(It is impossible to purchase this liability insurance policy only.)
・During regular curricular activities and school events, as well as on the way to and from the relevant locations
・During internships, nursing care experience, teaching practice, nursery practice,
and volunteer activities recognized as regular curricular activities, school events,
or extracurricular activities, as well as on the way to and from the relevant locations (However,
Course A does not cover medical-related practice, including clinical trials and nursing practice.)
〈e.g.〉
1.A student caused an explosion accident during a chemical experiment by mixing the wrong chemicals,
and his friend suffered burns as a result.
2.During nursing care experience,
a student tried to lift the body of an elderly man taking a bath, and injured him by mistake.
3.During teaching practice, a student dropped a personal computer of the school, and damaged it as a result.
4.When a student was running down the stairs of a station on the way to the university,
she unintentionally bumped into an elderly man in front of her, and he was severely injured as a result.

4.Insurance period
From April 1 to March 31 of the following year (for one year)
If an application is made after the start date of the insurance,
the insurance period is from the day following the date when an application is made to March 31 of the relevant academic year.
(An application for insurance is accepted at the university at any time.)
Comprehensive Insurance for Student Lives Coupled with PAS
Eligible people for this insurance policy are students who have purchased the Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (PAS) policy.
This insurance policy covers the entire period of student life, which is not covered by PAS alone.
