Graduate School of Education (Teacher Education)

The Graduate School of Education (Teacher Education) aims to train school teachers with high-level practical leadership skills through a curriculum organized based on the three philosophies of “practical property, interdisciplinary property, and modern property.” To achieve this aim, we provide students with a detailed and profound educational knowledge and research methods from regional and international perspectives based on education for training teachers provided in undergraduate programs. We also seek to enhance their theoretical and practical research capabilities and expertise related to educational settings and to improve the qualities and abilities required of teachers.
Based on the above-described viewpoint on fostering human resources, we extensively seek the following types of students (four common qualities):

1.Those who have a clear intention to become a teacher with a high level of specialization
2.Those who have qualities and abilities required of teachers
3.Those who have a passion for more sophisticated research on education
4.Those who have a strong interest in practical, interdisciplinary, and modern issues related to education

 
Educational Practices Major

The aim of this major is to nurture high-level practical leadership related to school education, special-needs education and school nursing education, and interdisciplinary and comprehensive leadership. To achieve this aim, we offer courses related to modern educational issues and courses related to school education, special-needs education, and school nursing education, aiming to improve the qualities and abilities required of teachers. Accordingly, we seek students with the following qualities and the four common qualities described above.

1.Those who have the required academic skills (in subjects stated in the Educational Personnel Certification Act) related to school education, special-needs education, and school nursing education
2.Those who have a passion for practical, interdisciplinary, and modern research on school education, special-needs education, and school nursing education

 
School Subject Methods and Practices Major

The aim of this major is to develop high-level practical teaching skills related to language education, mathematics and science education, social science education, domestic science education, and arts and sports education, and interdisciplinary and comprehensive teaching skills. To achieve this aim, we offer courses related to modern educational issues and courses related to subject pedagogy and subject content, aiming to improve the qualities and abilities required of teachers. Accordingly, we seek students with the following qualities and the four common qualities described above.

Teacher Training Practices and Development Major

The aim of this major is to develop comprehensive and integrated abilities related to teaching practice development in school and community education, student guidance, educational counseling, and class and school management, and problem-solving skills responding to issues of the times. To achieve this aim, we offer common courses required for modern educational practice and specialized courses related to teaching practice development, student guidance, educational counseling, and class and school management, aiming to improve the qualities and abilities required of teachers who exercise practical leadership in educational settings. Accordingly, we seek students with the following qualities and the four common qualities described above.

1.Those who have the required academic skills related to teaching practice development in school and community education, student guidance, educational counseling, and class and school management
2.Those who are motivated to resolve modern issues related to teaching practice development in school and community education, student guidance, educational counseling, and class and school management in a comprehensive and integrated manner

Master’s Course

■Division of Public Policy Studies
The Division of Public Policy Studies seeks students who are interested in various political issues in society, especially issues related to the local community, and who are willing to make practical efforts or advance their research to resolve these issues by acquiring practical and theoretical knowledge and survey analysis skills.

1.Those who aim to engage in public jobs or policy-related jobs (in the national government, municipal governments, private companies, various organizations, NPOs, think tanks, assemblies, etc.), or those currently engaged in such jobs who want to enhance their expertise and problem-solving skills
2.Those who want to acquire the ability to conduct research on contemporary political issues from an international perspective

■Division of Jurisprudence
The Division of Jurisprudence seeks students who attempt to solve increasingly complex and diverse legal issues arising in modern society, using broad and in-depth knowledge of laws.

1.Those who seek to become a legal professional or public servant, such as a judicial clerk, a tax accountant, or a social insurance consultant
2.Those who want to acquire theoretical problem-solving skills as professionals as described above
3.Those who want to acquire legal problem-solving skills as public servants or business persons
4.Those who seek a career in research in the field of law

■Division of Modern Social Human Studies
The Division of Modern Social Human Studies seeks students who want to solve contemporary human and social issues in a theoretical or practical manner by using scientific or academic methods for cultural and social research.

1.Those who aim to serve as a leader who can respond to the need for conflict resolution (issue resolution) and consensus formation, which are growing in organizations and local communities, by gaining and using the ability to resolve conflicts through negotiation and promote dialogue, and management skills
2.Those who aim to become a professional who possesses and demonstrates the ability to resolve various issues caused by the differences between Japan and China and to facilitate smooth communication in business settings in East Asia
3.Those who take a theoretical and empirical view on ethical issues in modern society, and who seek to gain the ability to deal with them in a practical setting or in their research
4.Those who seek to conduct empirical and logical research on sociocultural, linguistic, and geographical phenomena at home and abroad based on a survey methodology focusing on fieldwork
5.Those who want to develop the ability to deal with practical issues in modern society in a rational and objective manner, using philosophical and psychological methods that aim to understand humans from the paradigm of recognition

■Division of Cultural Sciences
The Division of Cultural Sciences aims to train specialized professionals who can play an active role in fields such as cultural administration, education, and mass communication by acquiring advanced and practical skills based on extensive academic knowledge of history, archaeology, folklore, Japanese and East Asian linguistics and literature, and Western linguistics and literature. We also aim to foster researchers who build upon their foundational studies in their academic fields and continue to deepen their studies in doctoral courses. Based on these viewpoints, we seek the following types of students:

1.Those who aim to become an expert in curation and cultural administration rooted in the local history and culture
2.Those who aim to become a Japanese language instructor who brings expansiveness and depth to classes, using the academic findings in Japanese linguistics and literature and Chinese linguistics and literature
3.Those who aim to become an English education professional well-versed in sophisticated theory and practical skills who can play an advanced role in improving English education in actual educational settings
4.Those who seek to acquire skills to independently conduct research on historical events, using a high level of ability to read and comprehend historical materials
5.Those who seek to pursue in-depth research on East Asian cultures from a broad perspective through studies of languages, literature, and folklore in East Asia
6.Those who aim to become an expert in linguistic and literary research or international exchanges by developing sophisticated language skills in English, German, and French

■Division of Instructional Systems
The Division of Instructional Systems (Master’s Course) seeks students who are interested in becoming an e-learning professional well-versed in instructional systems who has a broad knowledge and basic academic skills, including the ability to read and comprehend, understand, and express him/herself, and who possesses a strong will and drive to go through a rigorous study experience. We also seek those with a rich social experience who seek to acquire the following competences.

1.Those who aim to be able to draw up course development plans based on e-learning case study examples in various fields and areas and in the light of basic knowledge in instructional systems study, and to make a convincing proposal in accordance with the viewpoints of individual stakeholders
2.Those who aim to be able to design and develop learning contents that are educationally effective, efficient and appealing, making use of the function of learning support systems, such as LMS
3.Those who aim to be able to implement course development projects as leaders of development teams and to propose education service and business strategies based on personnel strategies and market needs

■Division of Human and Social Sciences
The Division of Human and Social Sciences seeks students who pursue advanced studies based on the latest academic standards in the fields of public policy, legal studies, negotiation and conflict resolution, advanced ethics, field research, and psychology/cognitive philosophy, and students who wish to become an advanced professional who can play an active role in the local and international community, integrating academic and practical knowledge.

Based on these viewpoints, we seek the following types of students:

1.Field of English Education Studies: Those who are interested in pursuing a career as a researcher or an advanced professional who critically examines the latest theoretical framework and study findings in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, and teaching methodology, and who applies these framework and research findings to theoretical and practical issues facing current English language education
2.Field of History Studies: Those who aim to acquire highly specialized academic skills in the field of history to contribute to the development of scholarship at research institutions, and who aim to ensure the qualitative improvement of cultural administration in museums, local governments, and other organizations
3.Field of Japanese & East Asian Cultures' Studies: Those who are interested in pursuing a career as a researcher or an advanced professional in an area of specialization who conducts in-depth research on the folklore, languages, and literature of Japan and East Asia, and who obtains knowledge of East Asian cultures as a whole
4.Field of Western Cultures' Studies: Those who are interested in pursuing a career as a researcher or an advanced professional in an area of specialization in the linguistics and literature of Britain, America, Germany, and France

■Division of Instructional Systems

Master’s Course

The Master’s Course of the Graduate School of Science and Technology seeks students who have a solid basic knowledge of a chosen discipline, basic presentation skills, and a strong curiosity and motivation for studies in science and technology, and who can tackle new challenges with a high sense of purpose to resolve them, in order to react to creative and high technologies, ranging from fundamental sciences to applied technologies.

■Science
The Field of Science aims to contribute to the succession and development of scientific studies as human intellectual properties founded on mathematics, physics, and chemistry, and to elucidate life phenomena and scientifically seek the truth underlying various issues facing modern society, including global environmental issues and energy-related issues. The educational goal of the field is to foster specialized professionals who have knowledge and ways of thinking common to science, which are necessary to achieve the aim of the field, and have a basic philosophy, and who can contribute widely to society as specialists in science. We also encourage students to go on to doctoral courses, aiming to foster people who can engage in international research activities. We place a special emphasis on training students with a wide background and comprehensive ability who can aggressively tackle various issues in the boundaries between different fields of science.

■Mathematics
Mathematics is a theoretical system that has been accumulated through human thought and consideration about various phenomena over a long period of time. It is still developing with new discoveries and is building up its own basic principles. Mathematical ways of thinking and methods are of assistance in elucidating the fundamental structure of social phenomena and natural phenomena, including physics, chemistry and biology. This field aims to foster students who have cutting-edge theories and achievements in mathematics and pursue them, and who can conduct research in an integrated manner, keeping the application of mathematics in various science fields in mind.

■New Frontier Sciences
The Field of New Frontier Sciences provides research and education to establish new interdisciplinary research fields, strongly promoting studies in cutting-edge and interdisciplinary academic fields, which we originally created, through the integration of science and engineering. We aim to provide students who have learned the basics of natural science, including science and engineering in undergraduate programs with high-level research and education, so that they can integrate their knowledge and open up new academic fields. In particular, we seek to rapidly foster next-generation researchers who have the vitality and originality to open up cutting-edge academic fields and lead the world, by offering consistent and practical education programs to students who wish to go on to doctoral courses from master’s courses to continue their studies.

■Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry
Material chemistry is becoming more important as one of the scientific technologies that can resolve various issues currently facing humankind and support the proper development of humankind in the 21st century. The Field of Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry aims to foster highly specialized professionals with humanity who can contribute to establishing a safe and rich industrial society by developing their knowledge on biological, natural, and artificial constituents in society based on material chemistry.

Based on these viewpoints, we seek students with the following qualities:
・Those who are willing to gain a broad understanding of material chemistry based on physics and chemistry
・Those who are willing to clarify and understand life science in a holistic and integrated manner

■Materials Science and Engineering
In the light of the fact that the development of materials forms the basis of industry, the Field of Materials Science and Engineering aims to disseminate new industrial structures centering on the creation of new materials to the world and to contribute to the further development of human society. We seek students who have sufficient knowledge of the basics of materials science and engineering, who have sophisticated views on universal issues, including global environmental issues and resources-related issues, and who have an awareness of issues as described below.

・Those who have an excellent insight into scientific technologies and the harmony between the well-being of humans and the global environment, and who wish to deepen their insight through cutting-edge materials science and engineering
・Those who are motivated to acquire specialized knowledge of advanced materials science and engineering to play an active role as engineers or researchers engaged in the creation of new materials
・Those who aim to be an engineer or researcher in the field of materials science and engineering who has an international perspective and can demonstrate leadership and the ability to take action on an international level
・Those who can find their own challenges and seek to resolve them, studying in a planned manner
■Mechanical System Engineering
The Field of Mechanical System Engineering aims to foster students who possess advanced professional abilities to figure out various issues related to mechanical systems under various environments from multiple perspectives, including the perspective of a complex society, the environment, and energy. Our educational goal is to have students gain a high degree of expertise, an awareness of issues, and problem-solving skills through fundamental and applied research on the characterization and measurement of mechanical materials, machine design, machine processing, the measurement and control of mechanical systems, and the efficient use of thermal and fluid energies.

・Those who are interested in mechanical systems in harmony with humans, society, and the natural environment, and who are motivated to actively tackle new challenges and difficult issues arising there

■Computer Science and Communication Engineering
The Field of Computer Science and Communication Engineering aims to provide state-of-the-art education via specialized courses to students who have studied the fundamentals of general engineering and the specialized fundamentals in the fields of computer science, electrical engineering, and electronics in undergraduate programs, and to have them master the modeling of issues and the research methods to resolve the issues.
This field covers a broad range of education and research areas, including information science, computer engineering, electronic communication engineering, human engineering, and energy engineering. Accordingly, we look for students who have steady basic knowledge in their specialized fields and have the ability to apply their knowledge of fundamental engineering, covering a broad range of areas, to their specialized fields in a flexible manner, and who are motivated to find and resolve new challenges.

■Civil and Environmental Engineering
The Field of Civil and Environmental Engineering aims to create a comfortable living and urban environment in harmony with the global environment. To this end, we work to foster highly specialized professionals with a rich sense of humanity who can widely deal with various issues related to infrastructure improvement, urban environment design, disaster preparedness, and conservation of wide-area environments, including the geosphere and the hydrosphere.

Based on these viewpoints, we seek students with the following qualities:
・Those who have a passion for infrastructure construction and improvement, environmental conservation, disaster preparedness, and attractive regional development, and who wish to contribute to the welfare and well-being of humans in the future with a high sense of ethics as highly specialized professionals engaged in improving the social environment
・Those who have a basic knowledge of mathematics and mechanics, a broad education about society, and an affection for the environment and humans, and who have a strong will to act independently with self-responsibility and to enhance their capabilities after entering the university
・Those who have communication skills, including English proficiency, that enable them to exchange information on an international level, and who can work cooperatively in a group, while displaying their originality

■Architecture
Architecture is a human-oriented and extensive academic field dealing with buildings and their surrounding environments, covering topics ranging from safety, comfort, and convenience to art. Its education and research areas are largely divided into building structure, environment, and planning. Applicants for this field are required to have the ability to deeply pursue issues in individual areas. They are also increasingly required to have the ability to integrate these areas in a comprehensive and balanced manner to accurately understand such a grand system as architecture in terms of time and space.

Based on these viewpoints, we seek students with the following qualities:
・Those who have basic academic skills in mathematics, physics, and the English language and specialized basic knowledge in the field of architecture
・Those who have communication skills, including English proficiency, to give academic presentations on research findings and presentations on architectural design works at competitions

Doctoral Course

The Doctoral Course of the Graduate School of Science and Technology seeks students who have a great interest in a broad range of fields in natural science, a consciousness of being a member of society and a world citizen with a good education, and a strong motivation and sense of purpose to aggressively pursue the frontier of the research fields in science and technology, and who are willing to cultivate and improve their ability to independently seek out and resolve new challenges and to develop flexible creativity.

■Science
The Field of Science aims to train students who have a deep and specialized knowledge of and insight into natural science, a wide perspective, and a high sense of ethics, and who can independently pursue their research at an internationally accepted level. We also aim to foster graduates who can pursue research on important topics and open up state-of-the-art research areas as researchers, or who can play an active role as teachers, public servants, or highly specialized professionals belonging to companies, using their expertise in science.

Based on these viewpoints, we seek students with the following qualities:
・Those who have a great interest in natural science and who devote themselves to studies

■New Frontier Sciences
The Field of New Frontier Sciences provides research and education to establish new interdisciplinary research fields, strongly promoting studies in cutting-edge and interdisciplinary academic fields, which we originally created, through the integration of science and engineering. We aim to provide students who have learned the basics and application of natural science, including science and engineering in master’s courses and undergraduate programs with high-level research and education, so that they can integrate their knowledge and open up new academic fields. Through this research and education, we aim to train them to become world-leading researchers. We also seek to rapidly foster next-generation researchers who have the vitality and originality to open up cutting-edge academic fields and lead the world, by offering practical education programs.

■Advanced Technology
It is necessary to develop comprehensive and interdisciplinary science and technology covering the basics and applications in manufacturing for near-future industries based on advanced science and technology. The Field of Advanced Technology aims to build a vibrant society with humanity to ensure the well-being of humans. To this end, we provide students with comprehensive education and research that help them address the changes in a diversified social environment through the development of new scientific technologies and the functional integration and reorganization of traditional technologies.

Based on these viewpoints, we seek students with the following qualities:
・Those who are motivated to pursue further study and research in the relevant area of specialization out of the areas of substances, materials, and machines, and who are willing to promote the development and application of frontier research with flexible creativity and rich sensibility

■Computer Science and Electrical Engineering
The Field of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering covers the research areas of computer science and communication engineering, frontier technology of energy and devices, information technology on human and environmental science, and applied mathematics. The educational goal of the field is to train researchers and highly specialized engineers who have highly specialized knowledge of electrical, electronic, and information engineering, which forms the base of a highly information-oriented society, and insights based on a global vision and a high sense of ethics, and who can play an active role in the international arena.

Based on these viewpoints, we seek students with the following qualities:
・Those who have high aspirations to promote basic and pioneering academic research in electrical, electronic and information engineering to contribute to the welfare of humans

■Architectural and Civil Engineering
The Field of Architectural and Civil Engineering aims to explore a better harmony and co-existence between the natural environment, the social environment, and the human environment. Our philosophy is to create environmental symbiosis technologies that can respond to the changes in social structure associated with a declining birthrate and aging population and the diversified needs of society, including the creation of sustainable cities through a reduction in environmental burden. We are engaged in research and development and human resources development to promote our aim and philosophy.

Based on these viewpoints, we seek students with the following qualities:
・Those who can handle the development of comprehensive advanced technology, including foundation engineering and applied technology concerned with the harmony and co-existence between the natural environment, the social environment, and the human environment, and who have the basic knowledge necessary in individual fields

The Graduate School of Medical Sciences aims to produce researchers, educators and highly specialized professionals who have advanced medical and life-science knowledge and critical thinking skills.
 
Master’s Course (Division of Medical Sciences)

The Division of Medical Sciences (Master’s Course) was established to provide graduates from various undergraduate schools, other than from medical, dental, and veterinary schools (departments), and those who are recognized as having attainments equal to or greater than graduation, with a basic knowledge of medicine and life sciences. We encourage them to become researchers and educators who can take on new medical and health care challenges brought about by technological innovation. We also aim to develop highly specialized professionals who can play a leading role in the areas of medicine, health care and life sciences, using a high level of expertise. Based on the above-mentioned establishment philosophy and aims, we are seeking students who meet the following criteria:

1.Those who are interested in medical and life sciences, and who have the capacity and strong will to be a researcher, an educator or a highly specialized professional who can deal with the fields in the forefront of medical science and life science
2.Those who possess a strong desire to go on to a doctoral course to develop their research carried out in the master’s course
3.Those who have a strong desire to complete a doctoral course to become a highly specialized professional in fields such as AIDS research, developmental biology and regenerative medicine, and metabolism, circulation and related informatics
4.Those who have a strong desire to complete a doctoral course to become a pioneer in the field of health life sciences who actively works in Japan and other Asian countries with a glocal perspective

The Doctoral Course (Division of Medical Sciences) was established to produce researchers, educators, and highly specialized professionals who possess a wide range of medical and life-science knowledge, profound analytical skills, and international research competency in their chosen area of expertise. We also aim to foster advanced medical doctors with a highly research-oriented mindset and problem-solving skills. Based on the above-mentioned establishment philosophy and aim, we are seeking students who meet the following criteria:

1.Those who have a rich sense of humanity, who are enthusiastic about contributing to medical science and life science in the future in various countries, including Japan, and who have the ability to do so through education and research
2.Those who communicate with people in and out of Japan through research, and who want to work towards the development of research and education that lead the world in the fields of medical and life sciences
3.Those who, as working members of society, have a strong will and the capacity to tackle research in medical and life sciences
4.Those who achieve a high level of basic scholastic ability in various fields of study other than the field of medical sciences, and who desire to provide education or conduct research in medical and life sciences, or to use their achievements to benefit society
5.Those who have a strong desire to become a highly specialized professional in fields such as AIDS research, developmental biology and regenerative medicine, and metabolism, circulation and related informatics
6.Those who conduct research on cancer and clinical oncology practice, and who aim to be qualified as a medical specialist or a certified physician specializing in clinical oncology care

The basic philosophy of the Master’s Course of the Graduate School of Health Sciences is to pursue the further sophistication and specialization of professional education provided in undergraduate programs to contribute to the health and welfare of Japanese people by establishing the educational system of health sciences through comprehensive and state-of-the-art education and research in the fields of health, medical service, and welfare and by giving back research findings to society. We aim to foster highly specialized professionals, educators, and researchers who are rich in humanity based on a high sense of ethics centering on human dignity, and who can play a leadership role in medical settings, using a high level of specialized knowledge. Based on the above-mentioned viewpoints, we are seeking students with the following qualities:

Consisting of the Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Department and the Clinical Pharmacy Department, the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences aims to foster high-level pharmaceutical specialists and life scientists who can pursue their own research and display their leading ability in their specialized field based on their achievements in the fields of basic pharmaceutical science, life science, medical pharmacy, and hygiene and social pharmacy cultivated in undergraduate education. The Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Department aims at nurturing researchers and technical experts in genome drug creation and fundamental drug creation who take the initiative in medical supply invention, and those in the fields of cutting-edge life sciences and environmental sciences. Meanwhile, the Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences Department seeks to train high-level clinical pharmacists with a leadership aptitude who can contribute to the correct application of medicinal supplies while deeply understanding the fundamentals of medicine in clinical settings, and clinical researchers who contribute to the prevention and medical treatment of diseases.
