■Division of Law, Policy and Conflict Resolution Studies
The Division of Law, Policy and Conflict Resolution Studies seeks those who are interested in a wide variety of issues in society and are willing to make practical efforts or advance their research to resolve such issues, for example, by acquiring practical and theoretical knowledge and survey analysis skills.
  1. Those who strive to engage or who already engage in specialist jobs, such as judicial scrivener, licensed tax accountant, and licensed social insurance consultant, public jobs or policy-related jobs (in the national government, municipal governments, private companies, various organizations, NPOs, think tanks, assemblies, etc.), or jobs requiring the demonstration of conflict-resolving capabilities at companies, medical institutes, schools, and other organizations, and who would like to enhance their expertise and theoretical problem-resolving capabilities
  2. Those who would like to acquire the ability to conduct research on contemporary social issues from an international perspective
  3. Those who aim to serve as a leader who can respond to growing needs in organizations and local communities for conflict resolution (problem resolution), consensus formation, and cooperation, by obtaining and demonstrating the ability to resolve conflicts through negotiation and dialogue, and management skills

Kumamoto University–The University of Massachusetts Boston Global Partnership for Conflict Resolution Studies
Today, Japanese society is witnessing conflicts which could not be imagined before, partly due to a change in people’s awareness, a change in the social structure, and globalization, and this phenomenon is becoming a social problem. In addition, a wide variety of disasters hitting different parts of Japan are causing conflicts inside or outside the affected areas each time, leading to a call for establishing methods and systems to resolve such conflicts.
With this background, the Division of Kumamoto University–The University of Massachusetts Boston Global Partnership for Conflict Resolution Studies seeks those with the following qualities:
  1. Those who regard local or global conflicts, such as ones arising in relationships with people nearby and ones occurring in families, organizations, regions, countries and the global society, as important and indispensable challenges in society today
  2.   1. Those who aim to become professionals who possess and demonstrate the ability to solve various issues caused by the differences between Japan and China and facilitate smooth communication in business settings in East Asia
  2. Those who seek to obtain the ability to analyze ethical issues in modern society in a theoretical and empirical manner and utilize such analysis in practical settings or in their research

■Division of Cultural Sciences
The Division of Cultural Sciences aims to train high-level professionals who have advanced research abilities, specialization, and applied skills founded on rich academic achievements, and who can pursue independent research on cultural issues in the fields of history, archaeology, folklore and linguistics and literature of Japan, East Asia, and the West. Based on these viewpoints, we seek the following types of students:

1.Field of English Education Studies: Those who are interested in pursuing a career as a researcher or an advanced professional who critically examines the latest theoretical framework and study findings in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, and teaching methodology, and who applies these framework and research findings to theoretical and practical issues facing current English language education
2.Field of History Studies: Those who aim to acquire highly specialized academic skills in the field of history to contribute to the development of scholarship at research institutions, and who aim to ensure the qualitative improvement of cultural administration in museums, local governments, and other organizations
3.Field of Japanese & East Asian Cultures' Studies: Those who are interested in pursuing a career as a researcher or an advanced professional in an area of specialization who conducts in-depth research on the folklore, languages, and literature of Japan and East Asia, and who obtains knowledge of East Asian cultures as a whole
4.Field of Western Cultures' Studies: Those who are interested in pursuing a career as a researcher or an advanced professional in an area of specialization in the linguistics and literature of Britain, America, Germany, and France

■Division of Instructional Systems
The Division of Instructional Systems (Doctoral Course) seeks students who are interested in becoming an education researcher or an advanced professional with research capability in the field of instructional systems who has a broad knowledge, basic academic skills, including the ability to read and comprehend, understand, and express him/herself, and knowledge on instructional systems, and who possesses a strong will and drive to go through a rigorous study experience. The Master’s Course of the Graduate School of Science and Technology seeks students who have a solid basic knowledge of a chosen discipline, basic presentation skills, and a strong curiosity and motivation for studies in science and technology, and who can tackle new challenges with a high sense of purpose to resolve them, in order to react to creative and high technologies, ranging from fundamental sciences to applied technologies.

■Science
This department endeavors to inherit and develop academic assets as humans’ intellectual property based on math, physics, and chemistry. In addition, we aim to clarify life phenomena and scientifically pursue the truth underlying a wide variety of problems confronting society today, such as the earth environment and energy. We strive to foster human resources who have the knowledge that is necessary to accomplish that aim and is common in the field of science, as well as the necessary way of thinking and philosophies; and who can contribute to society extensively and globally as a specialist in the field of science based on highly ethical standards.

■Civil and Environmental Engineering and Architecture
This department strives to foster high-level researchers and engineers who have high-level expertise in the field of civil engineering and architecture, covering the preservation of the natural environment, the planning, design, construction, and management of social infrastructure facilities and structures, and the prevention and reduction of disasters; and who have high-level capabilities with which they can contribute to establishing a sustainable society without disrupting harmony with the natural environment.
With this background, we seek those with the following qualities:
  • Those wishing to contribute to the welfare and wellbeing of humans in the future based on highly ethical standards as high-level professionals engaged in civil engineering and architecture, by obtaining the ability to solve a wide variety of problems from their own unique perspectives while using their basic and applied knowledge in the fields of civil engineering and architecture
  • Those who have a strong basic knowledge of math and mechanics, an extensive understanding of society, and a strong interest in the creation of a better human environment; and who have a strong willingness to take action independently at their own responsibility in order to enhance their capabilities even after being enrolled in the department

■Mechanical and Mathematical Engineering
This department provides manufacturing education, covering basic to applied fields, including mechanics and applied mathematics, which underpins mechanics, thereby striving to foster high-level researchers and engineers who can demonstrate their capabilities extensively in society.
With this background, we seek those with the following qualities:
  • Those who wish to obtain knowledge of production processes achieved with technologies underlying mechanics and computer technologies; to acquire basic to applied knowledge to develop such production process knowledge into mathematical models; and to address new problems and difficulties actively based on highly ethical standards
  • Those who can contribute to the wellbeing of humans and the maintenance of social order by demonstrating their capabilities in the scientific technology field, especially in the mechanical and mathematical engineering areas, based on their high-level expertise and rich liberal arts background
  • Those who strive to become high-level and international-minded engineers or educators who can demonstrate their capabilities in the global arena

■Computer Science and Electrical Engineering
This department strives to foster high-level researchers and engineers who have basic to applied knowledge with which they can address diverse social needs in the fields of computer science, electrics and electronics, and who can solve problems by thinking creatively and flexibly and creating new technologies. Our education and research cover an extensive range of fields, including computer science, computer engineering, electric communications engineering, human engineering, and energy engineering. Accordingly, we seek those who not only have a solid, specialized, basic knowledge but also can flexibly leverage their basic engineering knowledge of an extensive range of fields for their specialized areas, and who are motivated to discover and solve new problems.

This department aims to foster researchers and engineers who have high-level expertise and cutting-edge skills with which they can contribute to the development of scientific technologies and an industrial society and the establishment of a sustainable, recycling society based on materials engineering, material chemistry, and life chemistry.
With this background, we seek those with the following qualities:
  • Those who strive to obtain the high-level expertise and skills necessary as researchers or engineers who will underpin the next generation in the field of materials engineering, material chemistry, or life chemistry

Master’s Course (Division of Medical Sciences)

The Division of Medical Sciences (Master’s Course) was established to provide graduates from various undergraduate schools, other than from medical, dental, and veterinary schools (departments), and those who are recognized as having attainments equal to or greater than graduation, with a basic knowledge of medicine and life sciences. We encourage them to become researchers and educators who can take on new medical and health care challenges brought about by technological innovation. We also aim to develop highly specialized professionals who can play a leading role in the areas of medicine, health care and life sciences, using a high level of expertise. Based on the above-mentioned establishment philosophy and aims, we are seeking students who meet the following criteria:

1.Those who are interested in medical and life sciences, and who have the capacity and strong will to be a researcher, an educator or a highly specialized professional who can deal with the fields in the forefront of medical science and life science
2.Those who possess a strong desire to go on to a doctoral course to develop their research carried out in the master’s course
3.Those who have a strong desire to complete a doctoral course to become a highly specialized professional in fields such as AIDS research, developmental biology and regenerative medicine, and metabolism, circulation and related informatics

Consisting of the Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Department and the Clinical Pharmacy Department, the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences aims to foster high-level pharmaceutical specialists and life scientists who can pursue their own research and display their leading ability in their specialized field based on their achievements in the fields of basic pharmaceutical science, life science, medical pharmacy, and hygiene and social pharmacy cultivated in undergraduate education. The Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Department aims at nurturing researchers and technical experts in genome drug creation and fundamental drug creation who take the initiative in medical supply invention, and those in the fields of cutting-edge life sciences and environmental sciences. Meanwhile, the Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences Department seeks to train high-level clinical pharmacists with a leadership aptitude who can contribute to the correct application of medicinal supplies while deeply understanding the fundamentals of medicine in clinical settings, and clinical researchers who contribute to the prevention and medical treatment of diseases.
