Kumamoto University has established education and research goals according to the spirit of the Fundamental Law of Education and the School Education Law, as described below.
Kumamoto University aims to contribute to the community and global society by cultivating intelligent, moral, and skillful people, while working for the creation, inheritance, and development of knowledge, following the spirit of the Fundamental Law of Education and the School Education Law.

Faculty of Letters
The Faculty of Letters aims to create students who possess a good education and deep expertise in liberal arts, humanities, and social sciences, the practical ability to discover and resolve issues creatively and intelligently, and the global perspective and civic public sprit necessary in modern society to contribute to society.

Faculty of Education
The Faculty of Education seeks to provide students with the basic and specialized knowledge and skills required of teachers and community leaders and to nurture in them the ability to proactively investigate new issues. Through this education, we train teachers and community leaders for lifelong learning who have a broad perspective, a profound education, and a rich sense of humanity. In April 2022, the faculty was reorganized and consolidated from four courses to one course (three programs).

Students in this course learn not only the specialized subjects covered in special-needs education but also teaching theory and methods employed in the teaching profession, including student guidance and educational methodology, which are required of teachers |
| School Health Teacher Training Course | To train school health teachers who have advanced practical teaching skills. | Teacher Training Course for School Education | Primary and Secondary Education Program | To train elementary and junior high school teachers who can provide guidance and classroom management based on an accurate understanding of students, who can support “deep learning” of children and students based on their own experience of “deep learning”, who can be provide individually optimized education according to the individuality of each child with knowledge and skills in ICT utilization and inclusive education, who can provide education based on the principles of SDGs, Society 5.0, etc., with a view of the future of society. And to train the teachers who can respond as part of a “team school” to difficult-to-predict situations such as large-scale disasters and infectious disease outbreaks. |
| Special Needs Education Program | To train special-needs education teachers who have a high level of expertise and leadership and coordination skills in special needs education and who can work as a special needs school teacher as well as promote special needs education throughout the school, special needs classes and resource room. | |
| School Health Teacher Program | To train school health teachers who can educate and manage children’s physical and mental health and support their growth and development according to each child’s condition and circumstances, who can investigate the actual situation and develop countermeasures and instructional plans in response to the circumstances of each school and community, and the occurrence of health problems such as infectious disease outbreaks, who can provide guidance to children and students with mental and physical health problems based on their expertise as school health teachers, which is different from other teachers. And to train the teachers who can manage the school nurse’s room, which is the center of school health activities, and to play a coordinating role in collaboration with specialists and specialized institutions. |
Faculty of Law
The Faculty of Law aims to develop students’ basic ability to resolve specific issues arising in society, by providing them with a solid grounding in legal and political knowledge.

Thus, we nurture students to become human resources who can devote themselves to their studies all their lives.
The School of Health Sciences aims to foster well-qualified medical technologists, researchers, and educators who possess a good education and high-level professional knowledge and skills based on a respect for life and human dignity, and who can work as a member of a medical team to contribute to the local and international communities.

School of Pharmacy
Based on the philosophy that pharmaceutical science is a comprehensive science that contributes to the health of mankind through medicine, the School of Pharmacy provides students with basic knowledge related to the duties of a pharmacist, drug formulation and production, and health and hygiene, aiming to create highly creative and ethically strong students with a high-level ability to think pharmaceutically based on life sciences.
