Before Leaving Japan

Leaving Your Residence

Be sure to inform your landlord (or the administrative office of the dormitory) of your departure no later than one month prior to the day of moving-out. Otherwise, you may be charged for another month’s rent. Clean your room and return it to the condition it was when you moved in, and dispose of your garbage according to the designated rules. For bulky waste that you have to pay to dispose of and recyclable waste, you need to use the appropriate garbage collection service and pay a fee.

Other Procedures

Procedures at Municipal Office

Be sure to file a notification of moving overseas at the municipal office of your place of residence within two weeks of your date of departure. Otherwise, you will encounter problems that may include being obliged to pay residence tax, National Health Insurance and National Pension premiums.
Those who have joined the National Health Insurance and National Pension Plan are required to follow the necessary procedures as well.
Residence tax, which is determined by the individual’s income from the previous year, also must be adjusted before departure. For details, contact the municipal office of your place of residence or the accounting personnel in your department.
