Kumamoto University Hosts Roundtable Discussion on Advancing Globalization
Kumamoto University held a roundtable discussion on December 12, 2025, inviting Mr. Glenn Newman, an attorney licensed in three U.S. states-California, Oregon, and Illinois-who has extensive professional experience in international business, as well as Mr. Kimihiro Imaizumi, a certified public accountant (Member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants), who operates his own accounting firm for many years in the United States and active internationally, to exchange views with university leaders as part of efforts to further advance its global strategy.Drawing on their deep knowledge of international business, regional industry, and higher education, the invited experts offered candid and insightful perspectives on a wide range of topics, including the inward-looking tendencies observed in Kumamoto and Japan, strategic approaches necessary for successful overseas expansion, the practical communication skills required of students, and the future of regional cities facing population decline.
Mr. Newman emphasized the importance of adaptability when entering global markets, noting: “Excellence in technology alone is not enough to succeed overseas. We must remain flexible and reshape our products so they meet the needs of the market.”
Mr. Imaizumi highlighted the foundational nature of communication skills, stating: “Before language proficiency, students need the confidence and ability to clearly express their ideas—this is the basis of global competitiveness.”
University representatives discussed approaches to nurturing student motivation, the importance of providing continuous external stimulation that encourages growth, and ways the University can support students who aspire to pursue global opportunities. The discussion also touched on educational reform, strengthening international collaboration, and enhancing entrepreneurship education, particularly in light of regional industrial developments such as the rapid growth of the semiconductor sector.
The insights offered during this roundtable will serve as valuable guidance as Kumamoto University continues to advance its globalization initiatives. The University remains committed to leveraging external expertise and working together with the local community to cultivate a more globally engaged future through excellence in education, research, and societal collaboration.
