On February 18, 2025, a delegation from the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Osaka-Kobe visited Kumamoto University to meet with President Hisao Ogawa. The delegation was led by Consul General Melanie Saxinger, accompanied by Johannes Schweizer, Head of Economic Affairs, and Rina Jokai, Consular Translator. Representing Kumamoto University were Executive Vice President Jun Otani and Dean Toshihiro Ihara of the Graduate School of Science and Technology.

The meeting began with a welcoming speech by President Ogawa, followed by an overview of Kumamoto University, which highlighted the university’s key initiatives and areas of focus. Consul General Saxinger outlined the purpose of the visit, emphasizing two primary objectives: strengthening the ties between Kumamoto and Heidelberg, and exploring potential collaboration in the field of semiconductor-related education and innovation between universities. President Ogawa expressed a positive outlook on these initiatives, noting the similarities between Kumamoto University and many German universities, particularly national institutions, which could serve as a strong foundation for future cooperation.

Following the meeting, the delegation visited the Memorial Museum of the Fifth High School, a National Important Cultural Property, to deepen their understanding of Kumamoto University's rich history and heritage.

The connection between Kumamoto and Heidelberg dates back to 1964, and the two cities have been sister cities since 1992. This visit marks a new chapter in strengthening collaboration between the universities, particularly in the areas of semiconductor education, industry innovation, and development.
