Diwali Festival Brought Glowing Lights and Joy to Kumamoto University

On November 8th, Kumamoto University came alive with the vibrant celebration of Diwali, the Festival of Lights, as a diverse group of students and faculty members gathered near the University Library. The event, attended by individuals from India, Nepal, Pakistan, China, and Japan, marked the first-ever Diwali celebration at the university.

Diwali, one of the most important festivals in India and among Hindu communities worldwide, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Typically held in October or November, this year’s Diwali coincided with Halloween on October 31st, making it a unique day of celebration for many.

Led by Associate Professor Rwitajit Majumdar from the Research and Education Institute for Semiconductors and Informatics (REISI), this year’s festivities included participants holding lights in their hands as they greeted one another with “Happy Diwali”. The atmosphere was further enhanced by the sharing of delicious hand-made treats, including samosas, Indian snacks, and chai, offering a true taste of Indian culture.

A special highlight of the event was a video greeting from His Excellency Mr. Sibi George, the Ambassador of India to Japan. In his message, he expressed his delight in seeing Diwali celebrated at various universities across Japan and thanked the students, faculty, and friends of India for organizing the event. He also noted the long-standing friendship between India and Japan, emphasizing that their shared history has been one of cooperation and peace. He concluded with a heartfelt message: "Long live the Japan-India partnership."

The Diwali celebration at Kumamoto University was not only a joyful occasion for those from similar cultural backgrounds but also an enriching experience for cultural exchange, contributing to the university's diverse and inclusive atmosphere.

Associate Professor Majumdar shared his enthusiasm for future celebrations, saying, “Next year, I hope to engage even more people in this celebration and share our culture and happiness with the wider university community.”
