Kumamoto University Ranks 1st in Japan (47th in the world) for SDG Goal 14, Secures Top 400 Spot Globally in THE Impact Rankings 2024

Times Higher Education, a UK-based higher education magazine, published THE Impact Rankings 2024 on June 12, 2024 (JST).

The THE Impact Rankings utilize the framework of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to highlight universities' social contributions. The overall ranking is calculated by combining the mandatory score for SDG 17 (PATTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS), with the scores of the top three SDGs from SDG 1 to SDG 16 for each university.

Kumamoto University ranked between 301st and 400th in the world (out of 1,963 universities) and 14th in Japan in the overall rankings.

Notably, Kumamoto University’ achievement in SDG 14 (LIFE BELOW WATER: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development) received a high evaluation, ranking 47th in the world and 1st in Japan. It is assumed that this achievement is mainly attributed to the efforts of the Center for Water Cycle, Marine Environment and Disaster Management, including the Aizu Marine Station and other institutions from Kumamoto University.

Kumamoto University will remain committed to working as "One Team" to achieve the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) in the future.
