Industry-Academia Collaboration Agreement with TSMC has been concluded
In March 2024, Kumamoto University (KU) concluded an industry-academia collaboration agreement with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (TSMC), a leading global semiconductor manufacturer in Taiwan, focusing on research and talent development in the semiconductor field. This marks the first collaboration agreement between TSMC and a university in Japan following the decision to build a fab, Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, Inc. (JASM) in Kumamoto.
In conjunction with this agreement, a press briefing was held on April 8, 2024, with representatives from TSMC and JASM in attendance. During the briefing, President Ogawa and Director Otani explained that discussions would progress towards the implementation of joint projects based on the agreement, between KU, TSMC, JASM, and other TSMC subsidiaries in Japan.
With the establishment of JASM in Kumamoto, in which TSMC holds a majority stake, the cultivation and retention of talents in the semiconductor field have become pressing priorities. In response, KU launched the "School of Informatics", an organization equivalent to a faculty, and the "Semiconductor Device Program", equivalent to a department, within the Faculty of Engineering, in April of this year. The conclusion of this collaboration agreement with TSMC is expected to further promote research and talent development in the semiconductor field.
