Kumamoto-Mansfield Lecture Series

Kumamoto University is holding the lecture series cooperated with the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation (the Mansfield Foundation).
 
The Mansfield Foundation was created in 1983 to promote understanding and cooperation among nations and peoples of Asia and the United States. The Mansfield Foundation sponsors exchanges, dialogues, and publications that create networks among U.S. and Asian leaders, explore the underlying issues influencing public policies, and increase awareness about the nations and peoples of Asia. The Mansfield Fellowship Program, one of program of the Mansfield Foundation, is a professional development and international exchange program for federal employees. The program gives Fellows unparalleled access to the Japanese government, and allows them to experience the culture and language in order to become true experts on the country. Through intensive language studies and professional placements within Japanese government ministries, participants in the program gain an insider's view of this close friend and ally of the United States.
 
The Kumamoto-Mansfield Lecture Series provide an opportunity to learn about the U.S. and the world today by the Fellows who are currently participating in the Fellowship Program and other business expertise to introduce the current state of global society from the perspective of practitioners to participants who are openly invited not only from Kumamoto University but from outside the university as well.
 
On December 8, 2023, Ms. Beth Weinstein, Observatory Manager of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) introduced NASA’s Earth Observing (EO) program and discussed on the development life cycle of an EO satellite, using recent missions as examples. On December 15, 2023, Mr. Brian Vasel, Director of Operations of Global Monitoring Laboratory, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) introduced NOAA and Global Monitoring Laboratory’s climate science and research and discussed current challenges such as global warning.
Students, faculty and staff, as well as other participants from outside of the university joined the seminar and lively Q&A sessions are ensued.
