On June 8th 2023, Assoc. Prof. Apichat Jiravuttipong, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University (KKU) and other faculty members paid a courtesy call to the President Hisao Ogawa. Also present were Dr. Kazuhito Tomizawa, Exective Vice President for University Reform and Evaluation; Dr. Mitsuyo Kishida, Vice President for Global Education; Dr. Seiji Okada, Professor of Joint Research Center for Human Retrovirus Infection; and Mr. Kenji Kakuta, Executive Director of International Affairs Department.KKU is a national comprehensive university established in 1964 in Khon Kaen Province, Northeastern Thailand. It is the largest university in Northeastern Thailand and the hub of education and research in the region. Kumamoto University (KU) and KKU signed an inter-university academic exchange agreement in 2004 and have been conducting student/research exchanges mainly in the field of medicine since then. Furthermore, in 2017, Graduate School of Medical Sciences of KU and Faculty of Medicine of KKU signed a double degree program agreement. 5 students from KKU have been accepted to KU through this program so far, and in March 2023, a student from KKU received the first doctoral degree under this program.
During the meeting, the participants reviewed the exchange achievements and discussed specific plans for future exchanges. After the courtesy call, the delegates toured the Kurokami campus, which was a great opportunity for them to deepen their understanding of KU through visiting historical buildings designated as an important cultural property, such as the Memorial Museum of the Fifth High School and the Chemical Laboratory.
We hope that this courtesy call will promote further student/research exchange between KU and KKU and strengthen the cooperative relationship.
