Abstract:
We are an interdisciplinary team that combines archaeology and computer science to provide useful tools to study human history. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the identification of seeds and insects contained in potsherds from Japan’s Jomon period. Researchers have been using x-ray images to examine these potsherds and classify the various organic inclusions. However, such a task requires experience in general x-ray image analysis and knowledge in botany and entomology. We aim to develop an AI-powered tool that allows the common person, with very little training, to be able to efficiently identify these organic inclusions. In this session, we will discuss with you the interdisciplinary future of archaeology and computer science that will contribute to the elucidation of this part of human history.
