Although Kumamoto University uses a substantially smaller amount of chemicals than a factory, the variety of chemicals used is extensive. Mistakes when using or applying these chemicals could lead to environmental damage or degradation, explosions, or fires. In order to avoid this risk, it is crucial to strengthen chemical management and education on proper handling of chemicals on campus. As part of its efforts to reinforce its management of chemicals, Kumamoto University has introduced the "YAKUMO" chemical management support system.
